SABC's problem with regard to TV licenses, is that their chosen audience will not, nor can they afford to pay TV licenses. Broadening the definition of licensing devices will not bring in the envisioned income, because of this.
The fact that they are unable to currently collect license fees from these people, who are thrir targeted audience is not going to change. So good luck with their misguided efforts.
Disagree entirely.. they did not set their mandate, government does as a national broadcaster.
2ndly, like it or not, not paying a TV license when you watch tv, much like using the eToll highway, is theft and makes you no different to the government officials stealing. Glass houses and all of that.
While there is a lot of mismanagement & misappropriation of funds within the organization.. that is only part of the problem. The other is revenue collection which dodging has become fashionable to some particularly here on this forum hey.
Lastly the operating model of the organization needs some rework and oddly enough I watch sabc tv news every now and then (thank you news24) along with other news vendors (enca, ewn, etc) on YouTube which comes with ads. <- I’m kinda curious what their experience has been vs ad revenue and how sustainable it is and what the broader implications are vs their content library.
I see they launching something with Telkom.. kewl but I wouldn’t pay directly for content granted I don’t watch local content other than news.
Anyway.. I don’t have issues with externalizing collections, type in my id number and move along as per usual (I pay my tv license as the broader implications are more valid than the theft).
