DA must clean out racists in party - Mbete

Durban – ANC national chairperson Baleka Mbete on Saturday accused members of the DA of being racist. Mbete was speaking with Eye Witness News at a rally in Grabouw where the party celebrated its 104th birthday.

"We know who is racist. We know where racism is deeply steeped. The members of the DA are the ones who have illustrated who is racist...

"We are not saying that some of our people are not racist... but it is in the DA that a lot of cleaning up must happen.

"They must clean up their own house and leave the leadership to us," said Mbete.

Mbete also said it was important for the ANC to lead in all South African provinces.

"Only the ANC has the policies that really address issues of our people... and has the kind of leadership that is going to effect radical transformation and ensure that the socio-economic challenges that still remain are dealt with fundamentally and thoroughly," she said.

Nelson Mandela Bay council wants DA man axed for baboon comment

Port Elizabeth - The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has proposed that DA councillor Chris Roberts be axed from the council for calling a colleague in the UDM a "bobbejaan" (baboon).

"Following an exhaustive internal investigation led by Speaker of council, councillor Maria Hermans, a guilty verdict was reached," municipality spokesperson Kupido Baron said.

"Following the judgement, veteran ANC councillor Fikile Desi emotionally proposed a motion that Roberts should not be allowed to serve as a public representative in council anymore."

The motion was proposed on Thursday during the councils first sitting of the year.

Baron said the motion was supported by all opposition parties except the Democratic Alliance.

A total of 69 councillors voted in favour of the motion and 42 against.

Local government and traditional affairs MEC Fikile Xasa would take the council's decision under advisement and make a final decision.

Last week, the DA said it had fined Roberts R10 000 following the incident.

He was also ordered to step down as party whip in the Nelson Mandela Bay caucus and was precluded from holding any leadership positions in the caucus.

Roberts called UDM councillor Mongameli Bobani a "bobbejaan" during a council debate on July 30 last year.

Baron said during an internal investigation into the matter, which was made up of a multi-party team, reviewed the minutes from the day and audio recording.

"They found that he did indeed say those works [bobbejaan]."

ANC councillors wore black to the council meeting on Thursday, as a statement against racism.

Chief whip of council Litho Suka said: "When one of us is called a baboon we also feel the pain that is why we have decided to wear black as ANC councillors.

"We do so as a symbol of protest against the humiliation the black people suffer at the hands of these… racists"

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Danny Jordaan also addressed the meeting.

"I want to pledge on my own behalf and on behalf of the mayoral committee that we will do everything possible to lead by example to build social cohesion and fight racism," he was quoted as saying at the meeting.

"Racism is an abomination which has no place in our democratic society."

Bobani last week said he was not happy with the DA's decision to only fine Roberts and demote him from chief whip.

He accused the DA of not taking racism seriously.

But the DA's James Selfe, chairperson of the party's federal council, said a R10 000 fine was nowhere near a slap on the wrist.

It's your opinion that they don't deserve a thread. Coincidence that they involve negative opinions on the DA?

Those were the first two on the news feed this morning... (after the thread was created).

And you are welcome to poll all the other supermods on this.

The coincidence is the comments coming from the anc. Since this year is municipal elections they are using the only card they can.

Are Moderators now editors now? Deciding the news worthiness of an article? Even your opinion of these articles fanning the flames of racism is invalid with the two articles you have added up first.

With the first one, the DA leader himself said the DA is no place for racists and must leave the party. The second the DA found that councillor guilty and fined him. Now the council with all political parties except the DA wanting him removed altogether.

Both fair stories and deserving of a thread if a user feels like creating one IMO

Huh? The articles are being posted as per the source, so how are we deciding on the newsworthiness of them? They are already in the news section... simply in a single thread.

A thread with a biased title. Why not just racism debate thread or something neutral like that?

How do you lay a charge against a group of people?
Well the cops did it to the miners in Marikana (only criminal charges laid to date as far as I am aware but possibly wrong).

This however is clearly electioneering given that the dates the supposed workers supposedly were mistreated by the supposed evil whitey farmers related to the DA mayor elect of NMB was over five years ago.

There should be a statute of limitations on this sort of nonsense.
