A few years ago Welsh referees struck for better compensation. The Golden Lions referees went on strike last weekend for better - safer and less abusive - refereeing conditions.

SA Referees said:
All 10 Saturday's Pirates Grand Challenge semifinal matches in the Golden Lions' leagues, from first team to Under-19 team level, did not take place due to protest action by the appointed referees.

Well done! I hope that this leads to some serious action by die people in power! Some drastic action should be taken with regards to this matter because the abuse towards referees are getting more and more and there is no place in any sport for that kind of thing.

I am not surprised. The increase in abuse of referees is directly proportional to the drop in the standard of refereeing.

There are no consequences for a referee having a bad game and when the referees are challenged about their decisions they hide behind gray areas in the rules.

Dude you are way of target here. There is consequences but why should it be delt with in public?! Do coaches deal with their underperforming players in public - no they don't so why should it be any diffirent with referees.

Actually, I'm right ON target. So having sub-standard referees is just part of the game, just grin and bear it?

For an example of what I'm meaning look no further than Wayne Barnes, he is a typical example of referees having no consequences for a bad performance. He had a bad game in the 2007 WC quarter final NZ vs France, nothing was done about it. He ruined the 2nd Lions test match even the Lions complained! He had a bad game again on Saturday. Guess what nothing has happened he is till on the referee panel.

A player who has as many bad performances as Wayne Barnes would have been dropped long ago.

Don't be so sure about yourself... why is Earl Rose then still playing rugby? (to single out one player)
