Am I the only one who finds John Steenhuisen uninspiring, cheesy, and full of himself? I roll my eyes a lot when I read a quote from him or listen to him speak. He is very close to Cyril Ramaphosa levels of unbearable.

Don't diss the chihuahua ok!

Slightly off topic, it pleases me greatly that this thread is more popular than those American threads, getting to the fourth iteration is nie pap en vleis, keep it up everyone.
Seconded, Honourable Member. We must continue our economic growth on this platform.

Viva SA Politics Thread Viva!
Long Live SA Politics Thread Long Live!

That's how I feel about Mashaba and Beaumont tbh.

Speaking of, what is Helen's role in the DA exactly? I know her title doesn't suggest she is part of the day-to-day stuff, but she still has massive influence.
She's their SG equivalent in the ANC but she is larger than life so she's driving from the backseat. JS defers to her. He has no strategy of his own.

Among politicians, I find Maimane & Zille more bearable than others.
Yeah, they aren't too bad. My only issue with Maimane is that he fancies himself as an expert on everything. Again, that's just my view on him.

She's FedEx Chair. Essentially the SG. She does all the admin and implementation, day-to-day, etc.

Helen Zille is the real leader of the DA and they needed to find a yes man to insert into the leadership who would not take her on. John fitted that bill.

TBH, I think this will be even worse than the run up to 94.

The results in 94 were pretty much a foregone conclusion in my opinion... this time around many parties are fighting for their very lives and access to the trough.

In ‘92 already, the ANC were considered a government-in-waiting. Everyone knew the outcome.

This time; it’s really difficult to predict the outcome. For the first time since ‘94 - that also says a lot. In previous post ‘94 elections the question was “by how much will the ANC win”

My reading is that JS is non-confrontational so quite harmless. Suits Zille to run with the party.

True. The ANC, NP and IFP were essentially assured of getting into government. It was essentially settled, everyone was worried that a war would break out before then, which luckily didn't happen.

This time, it's all to play for. And this is my gen's 1994 moment. A crossroad again for SA.

Okay, so JS's boss, essentially. Go it.
He's her boss in theory but in practice yes you're right. What's curious is that Zille is the only DA leader to have taken up practical leadership roles in government but, everyone else (all of her anointment) didn't get the same opportunities. But perhaps to grow a party a leader shouldn't be stuck behind a government desk though Zille did quite well behind a government desk.

Alright, but surely you cannot deny Helen's influence?
I won't. Naturally, she would have influence, since she led the DA to take CoCT and WC (and hold them to this day).

But to act like she's this grand conspirator/puppetmaster and everyone else just cowers to her is a bit far-fetched tbh.
She is a God figure there.
Wouldn't say so, at least we haven't seen **** like this yet in regards to her or JS;
