The SABC is seriously broken – Cannot even broadcast local soccer

The SABC and South Africa’s Premier Soccer League have confirmed the national broadcaster will not show Absa Premiership matches.

As reported by News24, the new season of the Absa Premiership started today at 15:00 – with the SABC not showing the first match.

The PSL said that the nation may have to “accept that the SABC is incapable of meeting its requirements”.

If Supersport has the broadcast rights and SABC has to pay R280 million per year and only expect to make R10 million per year then this is actually a good financial decision from the SABC. It doesn't make them broken.

We need to know why Supersport has the whole of South Africa by the throat when it comes to sport.

The money Supersport pays to the PSL is invaluable to the league though.

There is basically no price that the SABC can manage. They can't even pay their employees without cooking the books.

But isn't the problem that the sabc are incapable of marketing and profiting from the rights? It's not that they're expensive it is that the sabc don't plan so everything is last minute. Surely in broadcast TV you're supposed to sell these things well in advance?

Now Showmax must step up and offer live broadcast of PSL game's
That would make the PSL amazingly accessible. Question is whether Multichoice would view that as a risk to cheaper DStv packages.

In the old days SABC used to broadcast international cricket, all the rugby games and F1, and still turn a profit, then corruption happen, Currently everyone at SABC has a hand in cookie jar, even the fat fat mummas without qualifications drive bmws, over staffed, over payed, nobody is productive, they believe local films is the way out when it has failed year after year. The sabc is run like a spaza shop without customers, they insist people pay tv licence but how many people in the rural areas pay tv licence, i guarantee not a single person, never pay your tv licence until they reduce staff, broadcast sport, broadcast International shows otherwise if you pay tv license you are doing nothing positive for the country or the national broadcaster, you are just funding someone's new mansion and fancy car, don't support fancy cars and mansions don't pay your tv licence, if you look at the major countries around the world nobody working at a national broadcaster is able to own what south africans working at the sabc own, its no joke, the cars and houses will compete with Hollywood, this is Africa, as Donald trump said

No doubt SABC is plagued by mismanagement and corruption and ultimately that is their downfall. I was mainly commenting on the fact that the article want to draw a concision that the SABC is broken because they did not show the PSL games. No that is not the reason they are broken for once that was actually a sound financial decision not to take a MASSIVE loss to show PSL games and for what?

We also have to look at the SOE SABC (free to air) vs Private Pay TV. I say free to ait because TV License is a failure and it will always be. There will be no revenue from that. The ONLY people coning from TV licenses are the debt collecting agencies because the SABC is paying more for those services than actually generating an income from TV licenses.

DSTV on the other hand has all the cards. They can sell the right at whatever price they want and if there is no buyers no problem I have my monthly subs that will pay for the broadcasting anyways then you got tons of revenue from ads and it's just snowballing from there. The SABC only really has ad revenue and the money they get from government to bail them out.

The SABC is out of the running a long time ago and there is NO way back. They need to get exclusive rights so they can generate more revenue from ads ect but do that they need to spend money they don't have and loans aren't the solution ether because then you are losing tons of money again on interest. I can't see the SABC ever getting back they just don't have the funds. Running old outdated broadcasting equipment not even broadcasting in HD which could be a big selling point if done correctly.

DSTV just comfortably sets on the couch and when a bid for sport comes up the swipe the card to secure. Millions of Rands available to secure. If they don't they will tank too so sadly it's a cut throat business.

The shebeen queen's of the sabc are moving with Louis Vuitton, fancy cars and mansions, has anyone seen the parking lot of the sabc?, all bought with your tv license money, the new sabc board found that the sabc was over staffed and was over spending on wages by not millions but billions of rand, cant remember exact figure, so we could just imagine the salaries of sabc staff, the unions stepped in and said they will bring in mass action if anyone at the sabc is retrenched, why doesn't same union bailout the sabc?,

Headline is wrong, should read:

The SABC is saving money by not broadcasting rubbish local soccer that no one wants to watch.

"South Africa’s Premier Soccer League"- a clear case of false advertising - there is nothing premium.
