Shelby unwraps supercharged (615 kW!) Signature Series Mustang.

Shelby has whipped the wraps off its limited-edition Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustang, saying it’s the “most polished” performance car in the American brand’s 17-year history.

Based on the top-tier Ford Mustang 5,0 V8 (in either fastback or convertible guise), the limited-edition model employs the firm’s familiar 5,0-litre V8 mill, supercharged to send a whopping 615 kW to the rear axle via either a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. A high-flow exhaust system adds aural drama to Signature Series package. Further mechanical upgrades include Shelby-tuned suspension and a fresh set of Brembo brakes. The 20-inch alloys, meanwhile, are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

According to the California-based company, the Signature Series Mustang was developed over two years, carefully engineered and refined to build a sportscar worthy of its founder’s name. The firm worked closely with Ford Performance and other partners on the project.

RoadTrip | If Baywatch was filmed in Cape Town, the real star would be a 600kW Super Snake

Snake in the Bay

Special Mustang models like the SVT Cobra and Cobra R returned with the fourth-generation model. After an update in 1999, it spawned the first Bullitt, a Mach 1 revival, and the 2000 Cobra R. There were no Shelby versions, though, as the Shelby-Ford partnership was over by 1969. It was revived in 2007, and since then, Shelby has developed several bespoke Shelby Mustang models.

Still, we are convinced that the stars of Baywatch - if it were to be resurrected now (there are rumours) – would be seen in the Super Snake version at least. Well-known racer, Peter Lindenberg, the local distributor of Shelby, kindly supplied us with the latest 2019 model for our shoot.

It is an eye-catching beast. Based on the latest S550 Mustang, this limited-edition package, each with a unique CSM number included in the Official Shelby Registry, has been extensively reworked. It features a new hood, rockers, spoilers, splitters, grilles, rear tail panel, and rear diffuser assembly. The Shelby theme is continued inside with finely appointed stitching and badges.

Powered by an 800 horsepower (nearly 600kW) cross-plane crankshaft variant of the Ford 5.0-litre V8 Voodoo engine (named the Predator) with a Whipple supercharger, the powerful Super Snake emits a magnificent sound. With nearly 1000Nm of torque, it whips from 0 - 100km/h in 3.5 seconds.

With a Penske-tuned suspension, MagnaRide dampers, 20-inch forged wheels, high-performance tyres, Brembo six-piston front, and four-piston rear brakes, and Shelby exhaust it effortlessly carved up the Chapmans Peak road. Yet, it is still tractable enough to burble down the Camps Bay main drag at snail's pace. The track-tuned suspension is hard, though, and amplifies every road undulation.

Nonetheless, this fastest of all Shelby Mustang specials is a magnificent and very collectible machine, ready for everyday use but with more than a healthy dose of muscle car appeal.

Shelby American has unveiled an 800bhp+ Mustang GT500

Because the standard 750bhp Shelby Mustang GT500 was far too tame…

Welcome, Internet, to the wild, wild world of the Shelby GT500 Signature Edition. We hope you’re sitting down…

You’d have been forgiven for thinking that the circa 750bhp in the standard Mustang GT500 was plenty to be getting on with, but Shelby is now offering a $29,995 upgrade pack which includes engine updates to take the 5.2-litre V8 over the 800bhp mark.

The new hardware includes a smaller performance supercharger pulley as well as a new intercooler and heat exchanger sitting under a vented carbon fibre bonnet. Nice. It’s not all about out and out power, though, as the ultimate Mustang has also been lowered on track-focused springs and been given a ‘more aggressive suspension tune’.

Three for SA! 600 kW Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustang priced

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has confirmed three units of the Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustang have been set aside for the local market, each offering around 600 kW.

Priced from R2 708 000 – subject to “exchange rate fluctuations” but including the base vehicle – the three examples will form part of a 50-unit global production run.

Locally, the limited-edition model will be available in both convertible and fastback form, with either an automatic transmission or a manual gearbox (and rear-wheel drive in both cases). All three units will be entered into the official Shelby Registry.

The Blue Oval brand’s 5,0-litre V8 petrol engine gains a “custom” Edelbrock supercharger, which helps to push the SA-spec model's peak power to “just over 800 hp” (so, somewhere in the region of 600 kW). A Borla exhaust system with four tailpipes is also included to deliver Shelby’s “signature soundtrack”.

New Shelby Super Snake Speedster revealed as 615 kW of open-top thrills

Meet the new Shelby Super Snake Speedster, a limited-edition two-seater roadster version of the Ford Mustang with a whopping 615 kW on tap.

The American firm says just 98 units will be produced, celebrating the 98th anniversary of founder Carroll Shelby’s birth.

While Shelby has yet to release full technical details, we do know the rear-driven Super Snake Speedster features a special convertible tonneau, unique striping, fresh floor mats and model-specific door-sill plates. A wide body package can also be specified, along with Penske track suspension.

Running on 93-octane fuel, Shelby’s supercharged version of the Blue Oval brand’s 5,0-litre V8 engine generates a whopping 615 kW. It is available with either a manual or automatic transmission.

Shelby Super Snake Speedster is 825bhp Ford Mustang drop-top

Celebrated Ford tuner reveals four new Mustang variants, headed up by £96,000 two-seat roadster

Shelby has announced a limited-run speedster version of its Super Snake flagship, turning the Ford Mustang into an 825bhp convertible to mark what would've been the 98th birthday of founder Carroll Shelby.

The Super Snake Speedster transforms the V8 muscle car into a two-seat roadster. Radically reworking the exterior, the conversion adds a convertible tonneau and bespoke paintwork. It also gains special floormats and door sill plates, while optional painted stripes, a widebody package and Penske track suspension are available too.

The Super Snake is a spiritual successor to the one-off experimental car created by Shelby in 1967. Priced from $133,785 (approximately £96,000) in either coupé or convertible form, it's powered by an 825bhp reworking of Ford’s 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, paired to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox.
