Every time I think I have reached the point where I can comprehend the stupidity of Telkom's marketing monkeys, I find myself bewildered when I discover that I have yet again underestimated just how stupid they are.
Today, I received my monthly phone bill with the standard rip-off call charges as always. Plus the standard rip-off rental charges, which are surprisingly more than the call charges, but having ADSL I can account for that...
Additionally, the envelope also contained a nice full colour printed blue page with sexy marketing photos of happy little people setting in from of happy little personal computers and laptops in a happy little utopia called a Sandton based photography studio, complete with sets to make it look like a happy little family home and a business in a futuristic office building.
The shiny marketing shwag paper is advertising the wonder of the internet to the poor uneducated masses. It goes on at length about how Telkom can now offer us the wonder of the internet at just R79 per month. For that, we may receive the privilege of spending a lot of money dialing up to Telkom's own IP backbone through its own voice backbone.
It also advertises that if we are "heavy" internet users, we could bring down the costs by buying an access option that will give us hundreds of free minutes at a ridiculously high price, or, we could buy their InfiniteCall option, which would limit the cost of any call during off peak time to just R8.50. Wow!
What annoys me is that they are sending this to me. I already own ADSL, which is permanent internet. I also already have TelkomInternet Internet over ADSL access, which is also much more expensive than the dial-up option, and in fact, includes a dial-up account!
Why are they sending this advert TO ME?
