However, when Telkom was asked for official comment, it said that after the promotional contract expires, subscribers will revert to the standard Internet 5 pricing and the contract will run on a month to month basis. The standard price for 8ta’s 10GB data bundle is R1,200 per month – 1,000% higher than the promotional rate.

If they keep that ToC, a lot of people are gonna get screwed over and they gonna be really angry. That's enough to bring 8ta down.

Here's a breakdown of what customers want, just leaving out one of them is a bad idea.

Safety
Reliability
Coverage
Simplicity
Value

I'm on the promo 5 account, if this is the case I would rather just cancel a few months early and pay a penalty in case I forget and get slapped with a R1200 invoice.

I seriously doubt that they will revert your account without (a) notifying you or (b) launching another promotional package.

8ta Rep, could we get some clarification on this?

Will we be allowed to renew our contracts @ the promotional price? Are we going to get slapped with R1200 once the contract expires?

I think there is going to be a lot of interest in this come the 2 year contract expiration date, and it would be beneficial to all parties to know where they stand. Maybe if the interest is great enough, 8ta could implement what the other network provider did, and that is to keep the contract on the same price after expiration until cancelled.

Don't be so alarmist ;) and besides if that is the case, you know now, rather than 2 months after your 24 months is up ;)

In this fast-changing market with regular promotions, I still don't get why people continue to sign up for contracts. At least with a voice contract the attraction may be the 'free' handset, but why on earth would anyone sign a data contract when prepaid data deals come out with fast frequency?

Data contract can be an attraction, look at VC and MTN, they don't have prepaid deals, at least with 8ta and Cell C we don't have to be attracted by contracts. I am happy with that...

Hi All

For clarification, the 10 GB promo deal has been extended until end of March 2013: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadband/49811-10gb-for-r199-mobile-data-promotion-extended.html
8ta announced today (11 May 2012) that it is extending their 10GIG, 3GIG and 120GIG data promotions until the end of March 2013.
Currently, as with all contracts, if not cancelled, it will continue. If the promotion has expired and you are still on contract, it will default to the Internet 6 Deal 10GB contract. We have no news as to what will happen by end of March 2013 as yet, but for now this is the default.

8ta, does that mean my current contract of R199 per month for 24 months is actually not for 24 months, and will become R1200 per month from month 12 onwards? Bait marketing?

In my understanding any contract will continue at current rate till contract expiry date. Question is what happen after contract expires and continues on month to month basis.

Hi there

Everyone will be alerted 2 months before the contract expires. You will also see this information on your monthly statement. sajunky is correct, if you have signed a 24 month contract at R199 per month, that is how much subscription you will be charged for per month 24 months regardless of the promotion expiring.

Any new news on the promo, Mr 8ta?

Has anyone heard anything about the promo? Looks as if it still has a March 2013 expiration date?

Both my promo contracts expire after March 2013. I will still be on contract after March, so this means I have to pay over R2000 a month for the contracts, starting when the promo expires in March? Can I cancel the (24 month) contracts without penalties?

However....

So which is it? I'm not trying to be rude. It is just that no one seems to be able to give me a straight answer. Over the phone all anyone is prepared to tell me is that the promo is still available.

There is straight answer to this question. 8ta has obligation in terms of the contract and you will pay the same till contract expiry date. What they say about promo expiry date it means effectively that you won't be able to do purchase a product or extend existing contract (on current conditions) after expiry date.

Thank you, sajunky. Now if 8ta will just confirm this, my soul will rest in peace.

They also said this.

That's referring to whether the promotion will continue after March 2013 - they have had no news regarding that.

It doesn't conflict, in any way, with the other statement, referring to contracts.

Depends on the definition of "it," I guess.

Well if that is the case they can cancel my cotnract when it is up, i aint paying R1200 / month for 10gb. madness.

so how long before the contract is finished do we have to give notice not to renew.

I don't think 8ta is stupid enough to do something like this. But it would be nice to have confirmation. I've always had a good experience with 8ta, but I'm with you regarding contract cancelling if it should happen. It could. Something similar happened with a friend's Vodacom data contract. R149 a month and then suddenly R348.

I read a thread here that said 8ta has to contact you at least 40 work days before the contract expires. Said it's in the fine print. If you like, try phoning the data help desk. The people there are really helpful. Except when it comes to the promo. They can't answer this question, except to say the contract is still available.
