The truth about iPhone prices in South Africa

So what he is saying is that the luxury tax does not normally get levied because the phone comes without an embedded SIM? Furthermore he says the courier would charge a handling fee for the large shipment and mostly vat would be charged for an imported phone.

So tell me again why exactly is your markup 39% on a 12 Pro Max at 36k Mr Levitan Connected devices?

Capitalism

Or just fleece the fools willing to pay

Even using the direct conversion US price, I just cannot justify (or rather afford?) an Apple iPhone... but having been given exposure to my sister's device (an iPhone 7): Android devices just does not compare. The buttery smoothness of the UI, the simplicity, the speed of apps, wow. I was pleasantly surprised. Everything just felt... right and natural.

This is normal. Big profit as we pay a huge import duty (you know such high taxes anyway). Rather than encourage growth we just think up another tax.

But whats funny is when Apple launches and tell the Apple users how the new phone is 3x faster than the old junk they bought 3 months ago. Hey may as well trade it in immediately or bin it.....

But it gets better. After someone paid a huge price for a mac. Just wait 10 years later when they try sell it for the same price they bought. Yes it's got Photoshop 1 (we're on say 10 now). It's a huge Bargain as the new photoshop is so pricey yes yes. Not that the version they are selling is so antique as is the Apple they want to sell.

Honestly. Thats why I avoid Apple. For a 9 year old Macbook air I can get a 3 year old HP Elitebook thats much better and faster .

Umm a big point appears to have been missed in the article. The UK retail price includes a substantial VAT component. This in turn won't be part of the base cost if imported to South Africa. In turn it is replaced by the VAT charged on imports.

Same for the USA where those prices are pre sales tax.

And lastly. Demand. We have a lot of iPhone lovers here and lots of people to whom a phone means an iPhone and nothing else. When there are willing buyers why not price as such?

In all fairness Windows laptops only today have had touchpads the quality that mac's have had for much much longer.

One thing to note is this.. iPhones can be run for +/- 6yrs easily, still get o/s support and run a large majority of apps.

Doesn’t justify the import handling slapped on (which I suspect is due to losses they making due to currency as dollar slides till mid or end of next year at the very least).

Same with Android as well. My Galaxy Note N7000 that came out in 2011 still got unofficial updates last year before I passed it on.

That isn't a fair comparison as you're not accounting for experience. The 4-6 years of iOS updates may be done by any iphone user. The same cannot be reasonably said for Android updates done unofficially.

iPhone 6s checking in.
Still better than any “modern” Android I’ve tried. Particularly Huawei.

They are just a delusional bunch. Normally always the first to come and complain on an Apple post like they need to prove something to the world

That's not the norm, in the formal channels android currently has on average a 2 version cycle for OS updates then the manufacturers stop releasing updates, only security updates thereafter if lucky get released. That's why its a known problem that android has heavy OS fragmentation.

It matters less and less as well. https://www.computerworld.com/article/3199824/apple-android-ios-upgrades-wwdc-2017.html
The result? As I've noted before (déjà vu all over again, right?), any random month could see a level of system-like updates for Android that's comparable to a major OS upgrade on iOS. Google just does it all in a subdued, piecemeal fashion and -- perhaps at its own expense in terms of public perception -- rarely draws attention to the big picture of what's happening and how all the pieces add up.

Why is that so important? Take a minute to look through Apple's new iOS 11 promo page. Once you get past the iPad-specific enhancements and into the broader phone-applicable stuff, you'll see that almost all of the new user-facing OS features in this upgrade are actually upgrades to OS-associated apps.

Wtf, how does an article about consumers being screwed turn in to a Apple / Android d!ck swing?
Bottom line, paying R25k for a cell phone is bizarre to me...
If you're willing to drop cash on a consumer device like that, then good for you.

Can I suggest you walk around with you iPhone taped to your forehead though, nobody will know you have one if it's in your pocket or hand bag or moon bag.

Wait..wait..wait...can we also do the same for the other OEM (Samsung, HUAWEI, etc)---I doubt these extra-costs are added along the value chain.

How does someone justify the ludicrous R26k+ cost of a new iPhone?

My most expensive phone I've plopped money on was a OnePlus, still gets updates today after 2 years. Running Android 10 for a year now, phone came out in Oct 2018, bought it in 2019 for a mere R6k (Flash sale on GB) I'm still happy with this phone, never caused me any headaches, still fast to this day, and will be for the next 2 years...

And no, next phone won't be a Samsung. I have seen what they have done with their newest line of phones, showing ads to users from stock apps (from what I have seen). Never liked Samsung in a way.

What would happen to the Apple fanbase if Apple decided it's time to show some ads in their stock caller app, etc on the iPhone and fancy M1 MacBooks? Tim Cook will be cooked alive by fans for this decision...
