The truth regarding SMS services money

For once Vodacom got it right! I am not impressed by Cell C and MTN "no comment". Not cool. - A cell C subscriber.

Credit where credit's due... well done Vodacom!

Seriously CellC, MTN... it's 2013 already, if you were acting in the best interests of your customers, you'd have implemented dbl-opt-in ages ago.

This round Vodacom wins! Rare I know!

I gave MTN verbal instruction NOT to act as agent, nor to allow anybody other than them, and especially NOT WASPs to put charges against my account. Normal response of them not able to do it... Fact is that I've requested this, have a reference number, request to speak to their legal department.

I suggest everybody starts phoning them, requesting to block WASP charges on their accounts. If they are not willing to listen, then we swamp them with a sheer volume of requests.

+1 good thing to do.

I have been emailing MTN customer care these last few days asking
1) How can I block WASP services a priori
2) What assistance they will give me when fraudulent billing occurs

After repeatedly been given the run-around and after insisting on a proper response, by the 5th reply I got them to commit to:
We will be able to log an unsubscribe request against the content providing company as well as request proof of the subscription to be sent to yourself via e-mail and lastly also log a request for a refund to be done.

So anybody battling with MTN, PM me and I will send the full details of the email.

I keep MTN (and the rest) responsible for hosting these companies in the first place. I had two bad experiences with MTN during my 2 year contract. My knee jerk reaction was to terminate the contract at its expiry date and port to CellC pay as you go. If my R10 airtime is finished it is finished. If push comes to shove I have the freedom to toss the sim card away and buy another.

Time to move to Vodacom's crappy network?

I originally took out a CellC contract for my daughter as CellC only supported premium rated SMS and not billing (OBS). They then introduced it and there went my idea.

Now CellC no longer allow billing on the top-up component off the airtime, only the prepaid portion.

But I prefer the Vodacom system where I can view and manage the WASP services linked to my MSISDN.

I got nailed by a WASP with Vodacom even though my account is set not to forward MSISDIN. I apparently double opted opted in. From a router. They're all the same.

Vodacom said that they saw a total reduction of over 33% in WASP revenue after they introduced their double opt-in system.

So they are saying that 33% of WASP revenue made by Vodacom pre-double opt in was fraudulent.

Surely then Vodacom are guilty of fraud?

Yes, they prevented further fraud, but they have profited through previous fraud. Are we supposed to just accept this? If me or you assist in theft, we will land up facing the full force of the law, not so with Vodacom?

No doubt that 33% is just going to MTN and cell C now.

No.

Some users accidentally sign up and the double opt in is to confirm their intentions

Same reason there is no option to allow no further data charges once the data bundle has expired/run out for contract customers. Vodacom this time.
