They mentioned something about UCT favouring white people. Did anyone understand that point. It all looked like pseudo-philosophy anyhow.

It's rubbish though, they have quotas now and it's actually harder for white kids to get in

I think 30% is too white, they'll argue. They'll possibly say - the numbers should reflect the demographics. So 5-8% or whatever it is should be white students.

It's quite strange but in America it's now more difficult for some minority kids to get in to universities/colleges. East Asians are having a tough time and East Asian kids have to be especially bright to get in, because they have sort of quota systems to allow enough minority kids in.

Don't like Rhodes (nor Smuts nor Milner), all references to them should be removed just like Afrikaner and Voortrekker heritage is destroyed without the anglophone world blinking an eye.

Now you're starting to get it. ;) Rhodes was a foreigner. He supported Great Britain and that large empire based on UK and the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon primarily the Briton - I guess Englishman. He is not a South African hero, but a British hero. Even if Rhodes was not a racist, or a bigger racist than average, he still would be a foreign hero.

Some English speakers still say apartheid was largely Afrikaaners fault and will beat their chests that they supported blacks in the pre 1991/2 days -(date when ANC was legalised).

In some ways the blacks in SA who are not from European heritage or rather chiefly British heritage have a point. Rhodes represents mixed loyalties. His statue and namesakes and things which go with that seem to perpetuate this "debt" SA has to their former colonial masters, and this is perpetuated in the way some people think of themselves. :)

Afrikaaners by the large would probably think the same thing. Rhodes was no friend of the Boer Republics and wanted the UK to control it all... because gold.

The group, which is claiming to represent black South Africans, said they are trying to create debate and awareness on how black people are treated at the university.
bloody counter revolutionary agents.jpg

so, transpires that not only are they filthy kunts, but they lack the simple ability of foresight on top of it.

well done !!

Personally I think this type of revisionism is no better than ISIS plundering and desecrating sacred historical sites of Babylonian times in Iraq. Nobody can earnestly point the finger at acts perpetrated over a 100 years ago. What does removing the statue prove other than we want to bath the radiant pleasures of white privilege without acknowledging the suffering of those before us. They can change the inscription or ask the ANC to build a human pyramid of African slaves and place Rhodes on top, entrails filtering down.

This isn't even a racial issue. CJ Rhodes' biggest sin was probably his wars in old Rhodesia, basically massacres of the Matabele's and other fighting tribes that stood in his way. All is fair in war. He did not just point at some stagglers on the side of the road and say, "yes those lot are the right colour, put them in the chaingang." Plenty of work in those days were done by Indian labourers, Arabs and other subjugated slaves. Some went back eventually, but plenty stayed because they knew they could make a better life here. And whatever you would say about Apartheid and even British rule, any labour was voluntary and Africans were in fact encouraged to stay true to their culture and living habits (to the advantage of educated whites). So there is a lot of contradiction here when every sort of problem is blamed on the legacy of oppression and indoctrination of Western values, but unequal education is lambasted in the same breath.

That is my actual view, I'm saying that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. The rush is on to rename towns/cities/street names with Afrikaner and Boer connotations. Interesting that it's all the Voortrekker towns/cities being renamed first and makes one wonder who is really behind it all. Apartheid being an age-old British invention after all.

Actually your point is a non sequitur. He said "invention" and never argued that the British were still in power. In fact it was De Klerk and an Afrikaans dominated party which decided to hand over power.

No one is calling for stuff he owned or donated to be erased. His good legacy is appreciated, but there is no need to glorify such a horrible person by having statues in his honour.
You will notice the dailymaverick echo'd those sentiments

Why erase history?

Really? The British left this country when ?

A referendum was held in 1960 to become a Republic, which happened in 1961. We also stepped out of the Commonwealth at that stage.

1776 Was the year the British Cape Colony implemented the first race based land act.
1910 Was when under the British Union Of South Africa, with the influence of Cecil John Rhodes and his kintergarden the next great controversial land act was implemented.

During the British Union Of South Africa, under principles derived from Rhodes, Jan Smuts, Milner etc. a variety of race-based laws were implemented, including a 'morality' type act.

The practice of ringing bells after dark to shove non-whites out of town after dark was implemented in the British Cape Colony and British Natal Colony by British representatives.

Apartheid was a term associated with 1948 when the Nats came to power within the British Union of South Africa. The real onslaught against race-based principles only became truly widespread when the Republic of South Africa came to be and hence associated with Afrikaner-rule alone, which is completely erroneous as it was (inconsistently) applied for centuries.
