The utter absurdity of what you can and cannot buy in shops

Yip, but defining a list of essential items is impossible because essential is different to everyone else.

Should someone be able to replace a lightbulb during this time if it blows - I'd say yes
Should chocolates, chips and soft drinks be considered an essential item? I'd say no
Should I be able to replace my car battery, I'd say yes
All barbers and hairdressers are closed, yet 2 of the Clicks stores I've been to won't allow you to buy hair trimmers - but you can buy hair dye

Chocolates and soft drinks are bring in more foot traffic than what car batteries would, so using the amount of traffic as the reason does not fit all the examples.

It's a tough job for the government for sure, but at the end of the day the thread title says it all.

Supermarkets and chemists can open.

If it's on the shelves in either there should be no restriction on buying any of it.

Resupply may be a different issue.

Nothing was off limits at my Spar earlier. Except smokes.

Saw the same thing at the Checkers & Spar I visited. Not to mention they were both as busy as ever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lots of idiots walking around in their Buffs though...

To govern is to choose(*). Sometimes its about popularity, i.e. p*ssing off the least number of people. Sometimes its doing the right thing. In this case neither seem to apply, its just a mess...

Bizarre & dangerous behaviour from staff at my local Checkers yesterday....pricing error on their part led to me being overcharged on multiple items (e.g. 5 for R25 deal)...so what do they do? ...they take every single one of the items out my bag to rescan them each individually, and then have them packed back into my bag by another staff member...I was like seriously...wot DA fuch?!?

In positive news, I went to Edgemead spar this morning and was able to buy two!! boxes of cigs. I feel very wealthy right now.

I asked them if I could buy all the cigs in the shop but they said no. Bastids.

Might take shops a while to catch up, but it’s just been released
Basically all grocery shops, and you need to buy something essential with the smokes

Now they just need to do this country wide.
I still can't see any benefit in stopping cigarette sales. It just creates more stress and frustration for people in these isolation fkd times. It's not good to punish others for the failure of some.

Just testing their authoritarian limits over the nation.
