These were South African Internet prices in 1995

I still remember the 56k days, 7 to 7... oh how far we have come since then
and when the phone was picked up we wanted to kill. My US Robotics use to work overtime. for decent speeds over a weekend use to "load Balance" as we had 3 lines in the house. with my uncle been in Dev he wrote a small app that Bonds the connections on NT Server 4 and then shared the internet connection from there on our wonderful Coax network R21 for a weekend of roughly 128kbps sometimes higher depending on connection quality

I remember going from our 56K connection to my uncle's 256K DSL line that he had installed and paid through the nose for. Having 128K of upload bandwidth was insane back in those days.

Here we are in 2005, complaining about paying slightly over R900 for a 1Mb DSL connection: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/telkom-adsl-pricing.17848/

This puts things into perspective even further:

I was in Datacomms when it started, 200bps and high speed 300/600 bps :)
left after doing specialist investigations, electronics repairs, helping start Diginet, and finally being the System Manager for Remote Access Testing Equip System for 7 years, in 1997. we had around 3000 analog modems lines to reroute through the shortest distance, then we could access each exchange remotely. left and did my MCSE in 1998.

Looks dystopian.
I'm sure the writers of lost wouldn't have minded that for use in those bunkers on the island lol.
The writers of Lost should have been shot for such a terrible ending to what was probably one of the best shows i'de ever been completely and utterly addicted to...

Ahhhh the days of watching porn on 56.6K modems....

Scary to think of the days with Telkom as a monopoly. But also scary to think of the days after Telkom as a monopoly.

The writer uses the word symmetrical often, I think he means synchronous..

Symmetrical is equal upload and download rates.
Asymmetrical is unequal upload and download rates.
Synchronous is transmitting in both directions at the same time.
The writer is correct.
