Yay I am syncing at 4096. That guestimate site says my line is capable of 6916kb so I should get good performance. I am on the old Telkom Adsl POTS modem and about 1.5km from the exchange according to the telkom techies from a couple of years ago!
Is this good or bad results:
SNR Margin: 27.7 downstream , 12.0 upstream
Line Attenuation: 30.6 downstream, 16.5 upstream
Data rate: 4096 down, 384 up
What you think?
Perhaps because telkom hasnt upgraded our line speeds yet. Just the sync rate.erm, no but like why can't i download with 4mbps yet?
You've already got the "upgrade" - if 2016 down is the best your line can sync at thats the best youre going to be able to get when they enable the faster connection on your line.Okay, so I don't really know what you guys are talking about, but have read all the posts. I bought and got a 1024 line. Checked my router and found the following:
SNR down = 26db, up = 12.0 db
Line Attenuation down = 49.0 db, up = 29.0 db
Date Rate down = 2016 kbps, up = 384 kbps
According to that calculation site, I can get 8192 kbps down, and 529 kbps up.
Is the "data rate" this sync speed you're talking about? Now to the nitty gritty - what's this "upgrade" you're all talking about? Do we all get upgraded, and at what cost? I'm in PE, fairly close to the exchange - less than 2 km's I think.
Any comments?
Telkom doesn't support ADSL over ISDN (adsl annex B), they only support ADSL over POTS (adsl annex A)I am quite far from the exchange. My attenuation (resistance, if it makes it easier to understand) is 49.5db. This is quite high. The distance makes it quite high.
However telkom spent quite a bit of time installing new lines up our road and new underground cables further back closer to the exhange to improve the signal to noise ratio when we had trouble a while ago. This resulted in an improved ratio of 14db. This enables me to sustain a decent service and makes the 4096 service attainable.
The trick if you are far from the exchange is to get telkom to try to provide you with "clean lines". Made a big difference for us.
As far as a I know you can have ADSL installed on an ISDN line. The ISDN lines are, by nature of the beast, much cleaner. So if you have a noise issue this might be an option.
Could he be referring to the physical copper line formerly being used for ISDN being of a higher quality? Personally I just assumed copper was copper but I'm just guessing.Telkom doesn't support ADSL over ISDN (adsl annex B), they only support ADSL over POTS (adsl annex A)
Telkom still shapes you down to 1024. The new 4096 service should be in effect end September.
