Things are looking up? (on 256k)

Well things may be looking up (at least for 256k guys). I'm currently downloading a Redhat iso from ftp.is at ± 20 kBps, so I decided to do some pings. Could this be the new bandwidth management system?

Ping statistics for 66.18.65.115:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 20, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 78ms, Maximum = 375ms, Average = 136ms

I've only ever seen 0% loss when they had international link problems. Other 256k users - how are things looking for you? I hope I haven't just jinxed myself.

EDIT: Also, it looks like they have prioritised HTTP over FTP. I can surf easily while downloading - my FTP speed just drops while web pages load quite quickly.

Tower: Mintek (82 was 12) - Signal: 19% - Firmware: 4.2.1.8 - 256k - Smoothwall and PPPoE

My SRT graph will reflect when it's working correctly.
I got a good 25KB/s result earlier this morning but it's dropped back into the 6KB/s range again [:(]

Many simplistic firewalls block active FTP. By default internet explorer and other browsers use active FTP.

If you want to keep using the firewall simply get the browser to use "passive" ftp....

RETR knoppix_tutorial.tar.gz
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for knoppix_tutorial.tar.gz (1787428 bytes).
226 File send OK.
Transferred: knoppix_tutorial.tar.gz 1.70 MB in 04:59 (5.83 KBps)
Transfer queue completed
Transferred 1 file totaling 1.70 MB in 05:00 (5.83 KBps)

Somethings wrong - makes a nice straight line at 6KB/s on netlimiter graph. [:(!]

did a download from downloads.com now. stuck at 6.5kB/s - but EVERYTHING else came to a grinding halt... i can't surf while I'm busy downloading... it stays on 6kB/s, even after changing it to 4-threaded download...

huh? :/

Well this is what I get on the 256kb package at a normally very slow period - 7pm:

Sentech speed test: "Your download speed is: 6.18 KBps

tucows.is.co.za single-thread d/l: 5.4 KBps

tucows.is.co.za multi-thread d/l: 18.1 KBps

Packet loss still much the same as well, although latency seems better:

Ping statistics for 66.18.65.115:
Packets: Sent = 25, Received = 21, Lost = 4 (16% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 78ms, Maximum = 234ms, Average = 116ms

Something quite different seems to be happening with downloads - get high speed bursts of speed followed by long pauses where there is zero traffic - almost like some sort of time slicing is in effect.

Overall, sorry to report not much significant improvement so far.

funny all this..
they can make a tweak then watch the forum for the results. We really have our fingers on the pulse of this network. All the time people are monitoring for changes and updates. Good work guys!! (those giving feedback)
