i.e save your 3 gig cap
I have seen many posts asking how you can minimise the usage or not waste the precious 3 gigs you are allocated. Heres some of my tips:
1) Get a browser that block ads and flash animations like Mozilla Firefox with the Adblock and
Flashblock plugins (http://www.mozilla.org/firefox)
2) If want to use Internet Explorer, consider using proxomitron(http://www.proxomitron.info/) or Privoxy(http://www.privoxy.org/) to block ads and flash
animations. It is a bit more difficult to set up, but well worth it.
3) Use a proxy server of some sort, even if is just one computer on the network. A great free
one is Squid (runs on Windows and Linux). Preferably use on a seperate computer running Linux (http://www.squid-cache.org) (http://www.acmeconsulting.it/pagine/opensource/download/squid.htm)
4) If you leave your Email client open all the time, set it to only check for email every 30 minutes, or even better, set it so it never checks for email. Do this on a manual basis
5) Check your computer/ for viruses and spyware. These can generate extra traffic on your line. Free virus checker (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php) Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and spybot search and destroy (http://security.kolla.de/) are best used in conjunction with one another
6) Avoid using p2p software, and if you do, when you are not downloading, close the program completey! They still generate traffic even when you are not downloading.
7) If you are a gamer, and do local gaming, consider gaming towards the end of the month, or after your cap has been reached. You can still game locally after your cap has been reached.
8) Change the password on your router if you have a Telkom router. See http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=334
9) If you are using any form of wireless, make sure it is secured in some way or another,as someone could hijack your connection and use your ADSL connection. See http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1152933,00.asp or http://www.securityfocus.com/guest/5479
10) Change your ADSL username and password! See http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4401
Hope these help
