A Xhosa friend of mine married a white girl from Canada. He used to come to work and moan about candle lit dinners and having to eat pasta. He says he does not understand why candlelight is regarded as romantic by whites because he grew up in the township where they had no electricity. He had to study by candlelight and therefore regards it as a ridiculous ritual. As for pasta, it is not 'real' food. If there is no meat, you cannot call it a meal, according to him.
His wife complained bitterly about him being unromantic and not wanting to eat pasta. According to her, he puts a piece of red meat in a pot with water, cooks it and voila.
They do have a beautiful little baby girl. Unfortunately this added to the rift that grew wider between the two every day. Not to mention his extra-marital affairs and suggestions of taking a second wife ...
