Hi guys, I'm on Cell C and because of the inconsistent network quality I was was thinking of moving to 8ta... Only thing that's holding me back are the decent data prices on cell c. I understand 8ta are a bit more expensive but way cheaper than MTN and Vodacom. Should I switch?

8ta is far more expensive for calls than all other networks. Even Vodacom and MTN introduced recently R1.20 all day/networks per second billing. 8ta is 50% more expensive.
The only attractive 8ta deals are for data.

That's fine by me. I use data 90% more than calls anyway

I'm on the same boat Mo0s, a recent porter from Voda but fed up with the poor data quality on Cell C. Never mind getting no data with full signal, lately there's no network all! Meaning dropped calls. Investigating porting to 8ta.

what makes you think 8ta network quality and signal availability will be better?

Look other thread about Telkom DNS servers. This week I experienced another problem, probably another battery theft from the tower, as it started around midnight (it happens every few months regularly). This time it took longer time. No 3G for 2 days, no signal, later even threre was signal, failed to register. Sometimes it allowed to register (or handed over from 2G) - but no throughput.

Edit 22th:
The last few days everything is back to normal, good service as usual.

Damn I was also thinking about an 8ta move from Cell C. Hmmm, running out of options here!

I myself am leaving cell c come upgrade time. I have no reception whatsoever. My work can never reach me, nor my wife.

My son had to be taken to hospital a few months back, and my wife just couldn't get through. She eventually did, 3 hours after the fact. So that was my last straw so to say.

I have been testing with an 8ta sim and have to say, it kicks cell c in their face. I am more than willing to pay the extra cash for a service I will actually receive.

All networks have issues from time to time. How you tell the good networks from the bad networks is how quickly they act to resolve those issues.

Telkom seems to be having data issues in the evening. We'll see how quickly they get get resolved. I remember the only issue I had when I was using CellC data was resolved within 48 hours of reporting it..

Maybe get an 8ta sim card from your local store, RICA it, load like R10 bucks airtime and test the service. That way, if it does not meet your expectations, you won't waste your time porting your number to 8ta. If 8ta's network crap, unfortunately Vodacom or MTN will be waiting for you....

allow me to explain myself a little then maybe you see I am not just an unhappy customer.. I have reason to complain.

I went on the 8ta 60 x 60 gig promo a few months ago already. I was very happy with the price and back then even the download speeds and service was not bad. I only had an issue with the stupid desktop-dashboard they give with the usb modem. But i went to huawei and downloaded their dashboard for free and never had problems again with it... so far so good.

a few weeks back things started getting out of shape more often than not. at times i would have emails not going through or attachments getting lost or corrupted and I would blame my e-mail-ISP for it. then i started getting same problem with other downloads where data is missing or corrupted.

Also at same time i realised that at certain times of the day my download speed was very very bad.. specially late afternoon to midnight. I was moaning and complaining and answering 8ta's silly standard querry list of stupid questions witch half of the users wont even understand if they read it... ( stonewalling tacktic)

Currently I have very very bad connectivity to no connectivety from about 16:00 to 23:00. then all suddenly the internet magically works super fast until 0:30 am and my connection is turned of at the local highsite or repeater. no warnings that they working on it or nothing.. been now happening for last week. So my nitetime data is almost useless.

in all this time I have been asking nicely.. asking sternly.. getting frustrated... begging... and even getting rude at one point... but my problems does not improve. I also lost clients because of all this and even some blaming me for recommending rubbish to them. ( I am in IT bissiness industry.) therefore I will not recommend rubbish again.

More also .. I have a few prepaid data packages atm...(4 to be exact) 8ta uses the latest one only.. refuses to use earlier one's at all.. so they stealing my older data from me because it expires while they using my latest bundle all the time.

8ta is no longer replying on my threads ... or replying to my inbox messages... guess they dont like moaners.

but before you take my opinion. read this forum and other forums like this and see how many hundreds are struggling with this problem at the moment. Its not isolated issues. Its a network wide problem.

at least at Vodacom i paid through my ears but I got service. Now i pay less but get rubbish service and unreliable internet. And I make my living on the net.

Good luck to you. WHatever you decide. at least you now have the experience of a longterm 8ta client.

8ta use to be great... now they are rubbish.

I switch to 8ta for data start of the month, and great speeds during the day but form 18h00 onwards your connection will be slower than a dial-up at some time, it's beyond horrible

I might agree with other downloads. it happens due to the bugs in Windows on poor connections. But when you are talking about lost or corrupted emails it let me think, you are using wrong Email client software (WEB based by example), as any POP client (the lowest denominator) use reliable TCP connection.
