the fan noise was a bug in older kernel (before 2.6.35) that does not honor the acpi settings for thinkpads--the new kernel 2.6.35 works like a charm in lucid--the fan is now completely silent, as it should be (Windows 7 settings), and machine runs cool (tempt) all the time. What a pleasure. Now thinking of using Lucid as my full time OS for office work--will be dual booting for Windows related work though.
I thought others could also try this and report here.
get the latest kernel upgrade here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...-next/current/
install in this order:
1. Linux-headers ..generic
2. Linux headers
3. linux image
