Was actually speaking to a colleague this morning abot the proposed 3 day work-weeks in other countries and I believe his answer still applies - this will not work in a Country with such high unemployment rates.

This will not work in any country serious about an economy. Period. Every work-day lost already amounts to trillions of Dollars in economic losses globally. Having to pay workers for more off days amounts to bigger expenses on companies too. This is a brilliant idea in a current working socialist country with a very small population and does not rely on employment. It will simply not work in any other country.

In at least one (probably most) of the trials you still work similar hours, just spread over 4 days instead of 5.
I've found that I am more productive after a 3 day weekend, even if I worker longer hours over the remaining 4 days.

Proposal makes sense to me. Same number of holidays, just more conveniently scheduled. Higher spend in tourism.

So instead of having to take off a monday or friday to use the public holiday... it becomes like a bank holiday.

Works for me

I totally agree with staff productivity and the advantages. But, in the real world it is not about staff productivity, it is about losing an economic working day. The losses incurred by the private sector, more specific companies, in having a closed day or having to pay working employees a double salary, amounting to larger company expenses.

Again, a lesser work week is a socialist idea. It has absolutely nothing to do with capatalism. As I mentioned above, this will work only in a socialist country, but then not even all of them. There are very specific requirements before this would ever work in a socialist country.

You won't lose a working day. You'll just distribute that day over the remaining 4.

Crappy idea. The point of a public holiday is to honour that day - not push it off for a long weekend.

In a way it makes sense, but i don't know.

I like the holidays that split the week up as well.

Also, if you have a domestic worker on only one day a week, it would suck if that day was Monday or Friday. Now it's split pretty evenly.

I have not met many people who can tell you what every public holiday commemorates. I read it up at some point, but even I can't tell you for all of them. And I'm more than happy to take the holiday even where I don't agree with what's being honoured (e.g. Easter, Christmas, Woman's Day, Heritage Day).

It makes sense. We still get to honour the event, we just do it at a time that is more convenient and restful for most people.

The UK has been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Only thing I can think of that doesn't make sense is for religious holidays where the specific day/period holds significance for them and they must take part in religious ceremonies on that day.

Its a loss in the sense that customers cannot access your business and may have to wait for 3 days! To get a response.

Correct. It is an economic day that is totally lost.

Easter is already covered. It is the definition of a proper long weekend.

Christmas is covered by proxy in that most people take their leave around Christmas anyway.
