I learnt Xhosa in a year. Informally as I worked in the Eastern Cape on Construction sites after University. Obviously very broken when I speak it and I understand it far better than I can speak it, but ultimately wasn't that difficult to develop a passing, workable knowledge of it.

Could it be because Sotho speakers in the FS tend to use Afrikaans loan words a lot more, that you think there are similarities?
Maybe, but the grammar and sounds seem easier to transfer to from Afrikaans than to Xhosa for example IMO.

Oddly enough, I can make the "c" and "q" sounds of Xhosa but not "x", my mouth glitches out when I try to lol.

Slow clap. What's next ? Learning how to plant 5 mielies in your backyard with two chickens running around ?
What is your problem with this exactly?

A foreigner who comes in, and can communicate in one of the official languages relatively well within a year is a bad thing, according to you?

I didn't say it's bad.

Nope...commenting on an anecdote, is not anecdotal in itself.

Try again and apply yourself.

I know you're doing this protect your ego, but I'll make it easy for you:

Anecdotal overload...it just gets better and better every time you need one.

You made a statement, part of which does not provide any evidence.

Try harder next time....and maybe also Google "anecdote"...so that you actually know wtf your are talking about.

You then asked me to Google exactly what an anecdote is, so I did, and this is what comes up:

an account regarded as unreliable or hearsay

Your account of his account is definitely partially unreliable or hearsay, the exact definition of an anecdote. I would say you don't need to provide evidence that Forcefate's statement is "anecdotal overload" (it's pretty clear that one could say it is stuffed with anecdotes to some degree because he mentions two anecdotes), but where your statement delves into anecdotal territory is that he often relies on anecdotes to the point where "it gets better and better every time you need one" (this is where your statement falls apart because you would need to provide more evidence as to this).

I agree that it's a respect thing and will do a lot to help bridge the gaps between communities.
Yeah.
I tried to learn Zulu in school and my teacher was so **** I switched to French (she got fired a month after I changed subjects).
I had Xhosa in Grade 4, but when the public schools switched to CAPS the next year, it just disappeared again for some reason.

The following is still seared into my mind:
"Molweni bafundi", "Molo titshalakazi", "Igama lakho ..."

Did i say it's a bad thing ?
Why were you sarcastic then? With the mielie post? If you didn't try to imply that it was a bad thing/non-thing?

My question to you now is this:
As hy Afrikaans in daai selle tyd geleer het i.p.v Xhosa en als, so jy dieselfde houding gehad het, Oom?
Fck me - This country is fcked.
/cue the sky is falling...

"Back in the day" when I was in high school (late 70s) , I had German and Northern Sotho as additional languages. When we had to pick subjects for St 8,9,10, I dropped Sotho and continued with German until matric. Why... I don't know :D Still annoyed with myself though... It's very strange that local black languages as a 3rd language option sort of disappeared from the curriculum
