Could speak/understand basic xhosa when growing up in the former Transkei but sadly lost it.
Tried 3x to learn it again even taking a couple classes but if don't speak it often enough just fades away.

My father is fluent and most of the farmers I know, I'm pretty jealous when they speak it and the instant attention and appreciation it brings.

I think you viewed as more "African" if you can speak one of the indigenous languages.

Coming from someone that took Afrikaans as a 2nd language all through school and can still barely speak it, to learn some Xhosa to the point where you can do basic communication in 1 year is pretty impressive.

Never been great with languages. Would love to learn another. Can be darn useful.
