This graph shows what happened to DStv when Netflix launched in South Africa

It looks very much as though DSTV continued to lose subscribers at the exact same rate as before the Netflix launch, so it would seem that absolutely nothing happened when Netflix launched here.

Yup. I don't think it's due to Netflix either. It's their "let's keep on charging them more while actually giving less" that's doing them in.

Interesting that no-one locally has picked up that while subscription fees have been rising, actual content viewing time has been decreasing due to more and more time being taken up with ads. Just like their now-struggling counterparts overseas, who have been blasted for their efforts to stuff more ads into every viewing hour, whether by editing down programs or speeding them up to ensure maximum commercial load.

Don't watch live TV so the ads are about the same.

I don't understand how that headline was derived from that graph.
It occurs to me that they're using one data point per year and plonking the Netflix logo in the middle of 2015, but Netflix launched in 2016 which makes their case even weaker since their subscriber losses level a bit after 2015. It actually seems to prove that Netflix helped stem DSTV's losses.

What gives MyBB? Why are you punting this MS BS?

MultiChoice has made no secret of the fact that DStv is under pressure thanks to Netflix’s popularity in South Africa.

Naspers chairman Koos Bekker previously said MultiChoice is struggling against Netflix, which he perceives as a major threat to the company.
All i have to say dstv, you dont have to be a rocket scientist to work out that your pricing i ridiciculously high for the rubbish that you are shoving down our throats. Wake up.

Yeah the reality this is due to their annual price increases and Monochoice using Netflix as a scapegoat. Looks like MyBB fell for it hook line and sinker.

Pretty much what I've always believed, i.e. that DSTV has been on the decline prior to significant Netflix uptake (likely as a result of the price increases/economic downturn) and that post-Netflix that decline has continued at much the same rate.

Netflix simply isn't a replacement for DSTV (unfortunately) and will never be one until the monopoly on live sport broadcasting is broken.

Still taking bets. 5/1 that they will still increase prices as usual

More than likely. They are already at the point of hitting a psychological barrier of R1000p/m for Premium. Once it exceeds that I suspect we'll see a sizable increase in cancellations/downgrades.

They probably not going to increase the price of premium or the PVR fees . All other packages will get the usual increase.

Lol, care to wager? Their shareholders will not allow that

Nobody said one has to confine themselves to only having Netflix. It's Netflix + the whole internet, in fact my problem is too much content.
