This graph shows what happened to DStv when Netflix launched in South Africa

Pretty much what I've always believed, i.e. that DSTV has been on the decline prior to significant Netflix uptake (likely as a result of the price increases/economic downturn) and that post-Netflix that decline has continued at much the same rate.

Netflix simply isn't a replacement for DSTV (unfortunately) and will never be one until the monopoly on live sport broadcasting is broken.

Correct , thats where my problem is.I really only watch live sport / live news and documentaries.Netflix doesnt cut it for me so stuck with dstv.

@Liam_Selby could you do another graph and plot DSTV subscriber drop vs cost per gb data? I left DSTV long before netflix was "available" in S.A, all had to do with price, a 4mb ADSL line with data hitting R4 a gb was key. Now with FTTH, WISPs, Rain LTE etc ... makes no sense to tie up so much money for one inflexible product.

Lol at that graph - I am sorry but there is no clear trend there, if you scaled back a bit it would look like a straight line

Lol, care to wager? Their shareholders will not allow that
Most premium subscribers who cancelled actually downgraded to a version of compact. Increasing the price of premium will cause more people to downgrade. Best cause of action is minimize the bleed on Premium Subscribers and shaft the people on the lower tiers. premium will have "value for money" comparison to other packages if the others increase price and premium stay the same price.

Netflix frustration on my side: My Netflix account has been hijacked twice in two weeks now. There seems to be a security problem with Netflix.

This article is flawed. I'm sorry. It looks at dstv's premium subscriber numbers only and correlates it directly to netflix. Fails to consider the poor economy with rising premium subscriptions, also fails to consider that there are South Africans from the income bracket that would pay for premium who have left the country.

Pathetic article, so poor that there is nothing worth commenting on.

BTW, this, article highlights why we need a "dislike" button.

so it carried on with its downward trend as it has been doing since before netflix launched in south africa.

who came up with this

There is a BIG issue that most people seem to miss....

Netflix has no adverts

I actually can't watch DSTV anymore due to the constant interruptions caused by mindless adverts. Who wants to watch that. The fact that you are paying 4-5 times more to watch repeats riddles with annoying adverts is madness.

And before you defend dtsv by saying, movies are not interrupted... blah blah blah. Who cares. I NEVER see adverts on Netflix.

Indeed. The audacity of advertising on a paid for service - greed to the max

monochoice has to adapt or die, simple as that,

cant keep doing the same thing as they been constantly doing, like its still 1989, and no competition.

its 2018, and people will find better things to watch given half a choice.
people want choice, that monochoice dont give them.
people want convenient entertainment, that multichoice dont give them.

time to adapt or die, not much options here.

Did all that. Had to do it to get my account back. Netflix is very good in helping to restore things in these cases but they did admit to me that this problem is a big challenge for them in Europe right now and that I am their first case in SA.

The perps get into one's account with a phishing or brute force attack (according to Netflix tech support) and then change the email address and password linked to the account to lock the real owner out. I am very very careful with emails and apps so it couldn't have come from that angle. I'm also the only person with my account details. I suspect there is a crack or similar out there that is in circulation. Netflix is so cheap so I do not get why anyone needs to do this.
