This graph shows what happened to DStv when Netflix launched in South Africa

they did admit to me that this problem is a big challenge for them in Europe right now and that I am their first case in SA.

good to know thanks. which devices do you log into netflix with

There is a BIG issue that most people seem to miss....

Netflix has no adverts

I actually can't watch DSTV anymore due to the constant interruptions caused by mindless adverts. Who wants to watch that. The fact that you are paying 4-5 times more to watch repeats riddles with annoying adverts is madness.

And before you defend dtsv by saying, movies are not interrupted... blah blah blah. Who cares. I NEVER see adverts on Netflix.
Adverts about the channel you're already watching and about shows just repeating later.

MultiChoice has made no secret of the fact that DStv is under pressure thanks to Netflix’s popularity in South Africa.

Naspers chairman Koos Bekker previously said MultiChoice is struggling against Netflix, which he perceives as a major threat to the company.

well Koos Bekker - when the going gets tough - the tough get going, but in your case you started whinging & whining about competition! despite been told that your business model (monopoly) is old and outdated - you did jack shyte about it except rise subs!!

you lost my account 3yrs ago cause I found a cheaper better way to enjoy MY entertainment!

WITHOUT ads & REPEATS!!

It occurs to me that they're using one data point per year and plonking the Netflix logo in the middle of 2015, but Netflix launched in 2016 which makes their case even weaker since their subscriber losses level a bit after 2015. It actually seems to prove that Netflix helped stem DSTV's losses.

What gives MyBB? Why are you punting this MS BS?

Probably a paid story again....nothing new

At the END of the show, not during it. If they start showing ads during a show, they can kiss my money goodbye too...

Last time I watched anything on dstv the adds run during the show all the time.

Hahaha obviously everyone that canceled between 2015 and 2016 did it because they were preping for Netflix :p

I personally ditched dstv before Netflix. Too many repeats and way too many ads

Yup. I don't think it's due to Netflix either. It's their "let's keep on charging them more while actually giving less" that's doing them in.

Interesting that no-one locally has picked up that while subscription fees have been rising, actual content viewing time has been decreasing due to more and more time being taken up with ads. Just like their now-struggling counterparts overseas, who have been blasted for their efforts to stuff more ads into every viewing hour, whether by editing down programs or speeding them up to ensure maximum commercial load.
Only thing I still regularly watch is Carte Blanche, but not while it airs. Have it set to record and also have it on catch up.
At one point Cartle Blanche got 1h30min segments as they started encroaching on 52 minutes of broadcast. Now they are back down to ~45-47 minutes and the show is still broadcast for 1h30min with adds. It's insane when half the time watched is adds, and some episodes it is more than half.

Seems to be more in line with fibre uptake and when FTTH came around, not really anything to do specifically with Netflix. I still have DSTV as well as Netflix and Amazon prime. Only generally use DSTV for the sport

My bad, they put it back to 65 minutes with the new season.

So 45 minutes long (2min30sec adds/warning), 20 minutes of adds currently.

Still a bit insane considering the hefty price tag one pays.

Multichoice are busy building a case attributing Netflix as the cause for subscriber erosion. Multichoice wants ICASA to regulate Netflix. However, ICASA said multichoice must first prove the correlation before it entertains the question on regulating.

And now we have conclusive proof - the comprehensive study undertaken reveals empirically, and which is graphically illustrated, that assertion multichoice wishes to advance, with a little help from its friends.
