I get what this oke is saying and agree with him to a point. We actually discussed this same subject on this forum in the Trevor Manual Budget speech thread the other day.

You are well paid and own a house, yet your forget that a fundamental gain from a stable government is that you are able to own any land. They protect that right. Get over yourself.

This comment on News24 is correct, yet misinformed. It is a similar thing to what is happening in the USA, the federal government was created to protect the citizens and rights of the constitution.

When they were given too much fiscal power the entire deck of cards came crashing down. That is why 20% of the states have declared sovereignty from The Union to rid themselves of government.

Yes, essentially the government now becomes the state government, but the principle is solid as the concerns of the sovereign state now focus on their own citizens.

It's a bit misleading though. Government affects us in ways he doesn't necessarily think of, such as negotiating passport and import / export arrangements with other countries, mediate border disputes and obviously they're supposed to be able to protect us in times of war via the army.

However, having said that, I've always felt that a country would be more efficient if government itself was a private company. Where ministers get hired and fired on the basis of work performance and credentials. They can be externally audited and the President would be like the CEO of a company.

I don't think I am getting value for money. The government does very little for me compared to what other government do for the whole nation.
