I really need ADSL at home for research purposes. (I've finally admitted to myself that 3G on my cellphone is just not cutting it.)

I've been following the telecomms industry but for some reason a tiny part of me thought that I'd be able to find something affordable.

Instead all I find is a serious black depression. R500 for a 380odd K connection with a 2 gig cap? Let's see, newly married, just bought a house. Like that's going to happen.

Apparently the SNO is offering competitive wholesale bandwidth to ISP's. Does anyone know which ISP's and what the savings involved are? Or are the ISP's going to screw us and pocket the difference?

That's what I'm waiting for before I switch over to Neotel. I wanna see what ADSL pricing they will be offering first. Currently I'm on ISDN, and download aprox. 27GB per month.

We should start hearing pricing for the SNO close to April 2007.

In the meantime all we can do is wait...

And I agree with you...it is depressing!!!

:L:

P.S. - welcome to the forums. Check out the ADSL FAQ thread. Very good read.

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah, I read the FAQ before posting.

I just thought that if Neotel were to sell bandwidth to ISP's at a lower price than Telkom (And I'd love to see some concrete numbers on that. If they are undercutting Telkom I'd love to know by how much.)) we would see a lowering of costs from the ISP's? Surely that is the way it is supposed to work.

Over half a year (I predict a delay of another 6 months.) until we see anything. Frustrating.

The Sentech's and iBurst's of the world aren't exactly either.

I was wondering if you guys can help me. I got my account on Saturday and i have not dowloaded a dam thing. They now say i have used 2.2 gigs already. How can this be. I have not watched videos, live audio, or even dowloaded any programs or files.
I have telkom 312 speed, with cybersmart 3gig for R125.

Sounds like your PC has been hijacked and is now spewing spam to all corners of the globe. Unplug your connection and ask someone who knows what they are doing to check your PC out for trojans.

Your username and password might also have been stolen and someone else is cashing in on your account. Try changing your password.

thanks for reply. I have checked my pc for virus and found nothing. Is it possible to have used 2.2 gigs by just veiwing web pages. How much does the average web page take up. I am so dissapointed. I been waiting so long for my adsl and now i have to have it for 4 days every month without downloading. :(

Not possible with average browsing for 4 days. Change the password on your router and then get your dsl account password changed. Make sure that no-one can access your router via wireless.

similar thing happned to me with a brand new notebook and newly installed connection

Ram: What has most probably happned to you my pedigree chum is that windoze decided to download updates - depending on how many were needed (since the last time your machine was online, if ever) these updates can be HUGE. Did you notice a little speech bubble eminating from a shiled looking icon in your system tray saying: "Updates are ready to install" or some such thing? If so then thats whats eaten yr cap... switch off automatic updates (too late now but its best to do ao anyway).

log into your router with what is probably the default username and password(admin, admin). Just look in there for something to do with changing password, changing admin password etc. Someone else probably hacked into your router and used you adsl username and password and then downloaded as much as they can. You have to change your router password before you put in the new adsl password ;)

Newly married and you could afford a house? Woha, consider yourself lucky! :) For the rest of us its renting all the way, at least for now.

Salary to afforord an average house, 29 grand. Crazy.

We got in to the lower end. Unfortunately you need to get your foot in the door as soon as possible with property but once you're in and established it's a little easier (Well, that's what we are counting on.)

We are making sacrifices though (An ADSL line looks like it's going to be one of them at this stage, unfortunately.)

I suppose I've managed for this long without it.
