This is how many domestic workers in South Africa have lost their jobs in 2016

I understand the reason behind minimum wages, but hell I wouldn't pay that little for a month's salary.

It should be a free market, people need to make an offer, and the other party can choose to accept or not.
How does this law impact "french benifits" like free meals, train tickets etc?!

When you pay peanuts...

I wish it were easier to get good/trustable cleaning lady.

I think that number is probably a bit low actually... mostly because most ppl employ a domestic for a day or two a week rather than full time.

easier to get a Zimbo in. Have a family member living close to the border. The farmers use Zims. No cr@p with them, and they WORK. And off course, sad but true, IT shops in SA are full of Zims and Indians.

Fringe benefit?

Anyway, they got laid off despite hopefully being paid at least the "minimum" wage. The employer obviously can't afford that anymore, never mind more.

And good time to blame the ANC. More interested in racist FB posts than getting the economy in any decent shape...

Well, sadly my next expense if I had to cut would be our domestic. Hopefully it doesn't come to that but it's the truth.

Many domestic workers stay on the property, and are given groceries and other perks, which explains the minimum salary, but that amout is still low.

From what I've read on the forums lately domestic workers have become lazy, demanding more for working less.

Could be another factor as well.

You South Africans are sooooo dependant on cleaning ladies. Why can't you do the cleaning yourselves? The rest of the world does it. You have been spoiled. Every second household I know in SA does employ a cleaning lady. Wake up!

So let's kill a valid aspect of the economy? People's livelihoods and support? You sound like one of those that burn down local infrastructure and then complain when your kids can't get to school.

Dude, not that I'm in that situation. Most people sit 2-3 hrs a day in traffic. Most work 8-5, both parents are breadwinners so go out and work. Most aren't in a position to do that. I see people from the N1 South returning home from Sandton's side at 6:30pm. You still then want to go and clean, cook etc?

So say 2.5million whites employ housekeepers etc. Imagine those let all the housekeepers go. Its an employment oppertunity and it feeds mouths where there aren't other oppertunities. Because of the current economic situation white woman are actually advertising to do your housekeeping. Because they need income. Now, previously they have been working, clerks, admin, PA, secretary, now this filters down to the lower levels of work. Think it over.

Good for you. Getting home at 1700 is something you don't often see anymore. Unless you're lucky to not work 30kms away from home.

well, its a luxury. part of the south african culture.

americans have mexicans or who ever.

UK people cannot afford to pay the service it is to expensive for most, but then they have better job creation. but, I heard of some people getting an eastern European lady to help out around the home over the past few years, probably will change now with brexit and all.

so you have people willing to do it for X amount and you have people willing to pay for it with X amount. whats the problem? they don't accept it, someone else with less will.
