This is how much load shedding costs retailers every day – and what they’re doing to leave Eskom in the dust

I hope that's a joke, or else you have no idea WTF you are talking about.

epah is just bitter and refuses to see that the previous Eskom CEOs simply kicked the maintenance can down the road (just like everything the ANC and municipalities do).

Don't worry, load shedding is going to get worse even after AdR leaves in March and then he can blame the next CEO as well. I suspect that unless the government gets serious about fixing Eskom the EAF will remain under 50% within the next couple of years leading to permanent stage 3/4+ load shedding.

The problem is our Gov's solution will be to implement laws to block private or self-power generation long before they try to fix the problem and enable business... Its all about how much money they can steal.

Other than the 100MW limit the government is not currently stopping anyone from generating power for self consumption. Plenty of businesses and residential customers are installing solar PV at the moment. Sure, the government may try to slap on some taxes down the road but we'll fight those when we get there. Make some hay (or electricity) while the sun still shines.

It doesn’t make sense though. Their cash cow is Eskom for mass tender theft but they are making rules allowing many to cut out eskom. That affects the bottom (theft) line.

Government can not fix Eskom, even if they gets serious.

The only solution is the private sector.

I know for a fact that many retailers and banks are doing absolutely nothing. Simply visit any large shopping center in and around my town during loadshedding and see what happens. Even at all the centers with generators. They all simply close shop. Not a single retailer or bank is interested in spending money on shopping center generators.

Happened just this afternoon at a local shopping centre. Power went off at 16:00 and most of the stores just shut up shop whereas they'd still be open until at least 18:00 on Fridays

And once they leave they will never need to go back.

Very soon the vast majority of electricity users will be those that only have illegal connections!

Yep, here it happens every day. Some days we are out from 06:00 the morning until 18:00 the evening, with probably 3 or 4 hours of electricity in between. On these day most shops and banks are closed the whole day. Some retailers will open for that 3 or 4 hours and close again. Hectic stuff. It is like a ghost town in our town and people are fleeing to other towns looking for employment. Scary place SA has become.
