A friend of mine got offered R50k to drive a car one way from JHB to CPT. He'd get another R50k once he arrived at the destination. He was also told to just get in, drive, and never open the boot. He politely declined.

What kind of crowd does your friend hang out with to get such an offer? Or was he a driver by profession? Because I doubt they'll just approach a random stranger.

Seems like quite a bit for a simple task? I mean fairly low risk compared to say drug mules crossing borders

Driving a fully laden truck and trailer is a hugely responsible job, with terrible hours, paid under R4k a month :0

Considering how inflation has hammered the prices of food etc how the hell do breadwinners manage to do anything with a wage of under R4k.

And people are surprised with the current issues in Sa where people steal electricity/rampant theft/crime etc.

Considering the hours they and the risks associated with the job, these salaries are pathetic.

I guess thats what you get in a market flooded with low skill people.

Aye.

I asked a guy up here in Zambia what their drivers get for transporting loads from mines to smelters. He said no more than around R7500.

Supply and demand?

These rates are likely already inflated through union action. :erm:

Not saying it's right, just saying...

Article said there's something like a 15k yearly shortfall of new drivers needed in the industry?

Driving a fully loaded horse and trailer is not a low skill job, hugely responsible job.
