What they dont tell you is that drivers get paid on top of that based on km's driven, get an allowance for "nights out" etc. From what I have seen from auditing quite a few transporters (trucking) is that the lowest basic salary for someone starting off is around R6,5k, but he will end up paying above R10k to R12k at the end of the month because of the km's and days out.
Also remember that if you employ a driver that has no references, like someone who just got his license, the reality is that the risk of them going awol after a month or two is quite high, so you start with a low basic. Anyway, the industry is highly unionised.
