LOL

I think they these stats-out-of-our-asses guys took the average salary of employed individuals in the top 10% of the population.

I can't believe they actually published R20k a month average income for South Africans. If you account for every citizen it is likely closer to R2500 a month if even.

Why would they include the underaged and the unemployed?

If you have 10 people earning R2500 a month and 1 person earning R1000000 then the average is R93181 a month

Oh really ? And if you had only 1 person employed in the country who earned R1million a month then I guess it is valid to state the average salary in South Africa is R1million a month, cool.

The point I am making is that these stats have absolutely zero basis in the real world and even spending money on these reports is a net loss to South Africa ie. tax payer money spend on reports that have no basis in reality.

We have an ever increasing unemployment rate ie. the people who retain their jobs become fewer and fewer and those who do retain their jobs slowly gain higher incomes likely because they operate their own businesses and they have to succeed.

Fewer people employed = fewer people with income = fewer people to average out for the average monthly salary = inflated numbers that have no worth behind them.

Why would they include the underaged and the unemployed?

I think I just answered this question above. The fact these reports ignore unemployment is exactly why these reports simply lack any credibility.

It's ambiguous as to whether they're talking about median or mean.

These kinds of things usually only refer to workers in formal, non-agricultural employment.

That's how mean averages work, anyone with a basic primary school knowledge of statistcs and maths would understand that. When the average increases it indicates more money is being paid in salaries - it doesn't indicate who is getting the money. If you want the median or mode 'average', instead of the mean, then you need to look at a different statistic, that's all

Yes and yes. It’s not the concept that’s absurd, it’s your example.

Unemployment is a separate concern, pushing these into the same number hides information.

It’s the mean. The Stats SA article spends most of its time talking about the changes in the total salaries (billions) rather than per-capita, so I assume they take the total earnings estimate and divide it by the employer population estimate (numbers wouldn’t make sense otherwise). I am sure the median would be much lower.

so why would they choose to do a report about average salaries when they KNOW it will NOT give an honest reflection of how things are?

Because it looks way way better than the median...

The sad part is that these articles and results come from tax payer funding into Stats SA that produce numbers that are meaningless.

These misleading stats published would enrage more South Africans who most definitely don't earn close to that apparently average income and with parties such as the EFF these BS stats will add more fuel to their current burning dungpile flame.

To make matters worse I would love to know out of what ******* they pulled this figure.

"Year on year, employment figures were up by 0.2%.."

BS, we have a steady decline of unemployment in this country. I would have a good laugh if I had their source material to validate their 0.2% year on year employment gains.

Employed people amount can go up, even as the unemployment figure increases. Think things through, don't be an ANC voter...
