This is the safest place to live in SA, based on News24's CrimeCheck

I think the stats are generated on reported crime?

A lot of crime goes unreported and often, even when the crime is reported, the CSC is too fcuked up to enter it and give you a IR or OB number.

I'm sure they are generated on reported crime...

My comment on it, is that whilst we can probably go through all the raw numbers that are published and see that things look odd, it absolutely jumps out at you when its visualised in the way News24 have. It just shows how fscking atrociously wrong our crime stats actually are.

Criminals usually don't do crime at home.
I once gave a dude a lift into his township.

He explained to me that muggings and theft were common in the area, and the folks learnt to avoid certain routes, and to keep valuables else where.
For him, its just a daily fact of life - no biggie.

Just had a quick squizz around this new little CrimeCheck tool that News24 has launched. The first thing that jumps out at me is just how screwed the crime stats must be.

Place like Pinetown (the whole suburb area) is classed as high risk, which it is... but the townships of Kwadebeka and Inanda just next door are low crime risk....

It could also work according to crime reportage. People in townships most often don't report crimes and their local police stations are not helpful.

This is classic example of garbage data in, garbage data out. My very quiet suburb with virtually zero crime is ranked as a high crime area, but an informal settlement 10kms away is ranked low crime. The way the precinct perimeters work totally skews the stats and gives a completely inaccurate picture.

Its going to be that way in many parts of the country tbh....

Our Crime Stats are horribly skewed and incorrect for a variety of reasons, but a visualisation like this from News24 shows just how badly screwed they are.

Most people don't bother opening crime dockets in the small town I live near as the public prosecutor throws most out. So the crime data is completely skewed.

Data is probably based on formally reported crime, which seems to mean that those type of townships don't report as much.

Because they know their cases aren't even going to be looked at, never mind investigated. So why bother even reporting crime except for insurance purposes.

There was a time I compared major reported crimes as published by our localised newspapers to the actual police's reported statistics, and it didn't measure up, and this is applying some correction to the type of crime reported. The police may file cases differently, but still, the numbers are skew.

I had a look at Crimecheck now, and it cannot possibly be accurate. Stock theft and other plunder are rife in some rural areas and farmers are reporting those crimes. If Crimecheck uses actual statistics I am calling on the numbers being gamed.

Damn, commercial crime is high in Somerset West.
