This is what happened to Linobuntu and LinoSuse (Time for something new)

I am sure a lot of the older members remember my two Linux projects.

The one and most popular was Linobuntu!

It had two editions built on 8.04 and 9.04, however it eventually made it to stable branch. A lot of members requested this and never got a CD from me for it.

One of the reasons and most important was the name. That is right the makers of Ubuntu, did not want the distro to be called Linobuntu, as I was infringing on their name and work:crying:

To avoid any issues I cancelled the project and let it lie dormant. Much to the anger and disappointment of a lot of members.

However I was not finished and started LinoSuse which was based on OpenSuse 11, this distro never got as much of a wide appeal and I eventually canned it as the hard work going into it was not being appreciated.

However this projects have not stopped me from pursing my aim of creating an easy to use and ready to use Linux distro. Currently LINO OS I am playing with, there are at the moment 4 prototypes

Prototype 1) Based on Ubuntu 9.10 *works fairly decently but due to some changes in Ubuntu, the customising and stability is in question at the moment.

Prototype 2) Based on Debian 5.0.3 (Squeeze) Fairly stable and reliable but having huge problems getting it to install from the LIVE CD.

Prototype 3) Based on Ultimate Edition, is currently being tested and worked on.

Prototype 4) Based on Mepis Linux, has kernel stability issues

tbf that makes sense from their side.

squeeze livecd's seem to have some issues. i think at some point even the debian project stopped providing them.

I am not sure if you remember me telling you this snag may arise with the name. anyway, I wish you the very best for the projects--they sound exciting.!

Based on Ubuntu 9.10
Not a good idea at all. Most other projects that was Ubuntu based has now moved to either Debian or some other RPM based distro.
Ubuntu became notorious for changing stuff that would break other distros based on them, like you also experienced.
If you would like to know more on why Ubuntu is not a stable platform to copy from, read the EEEbuntu forums, if I have time I'll copy a few lines from their devs onto here.

I actually do remember, thank you I hope I can at least get LINO OS 1 actually finished and released.

You are correct, basing on pure Ubuntu is a pain and a half. Not to mention I find them broken when released, not compatible with previous versions and personally I think its becoming dumb down.

I managed to break my base Ubuntu 9.10 install this afternoon after updating it. I might consider Linux Mint as they keep things more constant than Ubuntu does however being based on Ubuntu I will face same issues.

I tried Ultimate Edition 2.5 but in all honesty I find it so bloated, when it is cut down it crashes something terrible.

Pure Debian is not easy to get working, however I might eventually suffer through with it, or use Mepis which is not Debian and no longer Ubuntu. Maybe even a Fedora based distro

Hey Lino, Why are you doing this, if I may ask? don't we already have enough distro's to choose from? What is unique or different with Lino OS? If you think of Mepis--for me this distro is well thought out and outperforms even Ubuntu when it comes to stability and usability--besides it works on may hardwares as ubuntu does; has a good collection of apps in repo's and works like a charm. I use Ubuntu becaus eI like testing new things--but if you are planning to be different, i would look at the Mepis model and apply that to Ubuntu. just my 2c.

To be honest why am I doing this? Well one of the reasons is that I disappointed and let down a lot of people with regards to Linobuntu. I want them to know it was not all in vain. However my reasons are still the same as they were for Linobuntu. Make something easier to use, simple, reliable. For myself personally it teaches me more about Linux and if it something I can share why not.

Pal, why not look into making something off of Mandriva perhaps? They have been around for yonks, and have a number of distro's that have based themselves on it, some being rescue disks, others more specialised stuff.

One thing I've learnt lately is that the whole row over deb and rpm is silly. Most distro's are long over that stage of having package dependency issues, the gui frontends work like a charm. Pure Debian is rock solid, but it lags behind quite a bit. Ubuntu has all the power behind it, but I've seen the issues my colleague at work has with it from time to time. Maybe something based off Mandriva might work out.
