So 4522 South Africans emigrated to American Samoa (~4.4% of 102,793), which according to Wikipedia has a (2015 est) population of 54,343. This means about 8% of American Samoans are originally South African. Hmmm.... I call BS.

The 4.4% is for those going "overseas", which is 4.4% of a subset of the 102793 people. The percentage of African vs. non-African countries doesn't seem to be reported, which is a bit sloppy.

To me though, the biggest thing is how they know who has actually left the country permanently. Personally, I just left - most people I know didn't formally emigrate, since they were young and didn't have a large amount of cash they needed to move out the country.
