For avid fly hunters - these used to be the business back in the day, but lately they seem to have been replaced by those foam/plastic things which are gross after a few splats, and the zapper one's aren't too effective - they just k/o & never seem to kill. Anyone know any stores that still sell them? It's a bit hit & miss trying to find somewhere that still stocks them.

Cape Town -> Western Cape (pref southern suburbs, cbd, somerset west).

Thanks :).

Citronella oil into those plastic table lanterns they use at some restaurants, those keeps the flies away and thus you don't have to swat them...

Think I've seen them at Builders Warehouse - have to admit nothing beats the satisfaction of moering an irritating, persistent fly with a decent swatter :D

A spray of Mortein leading to an ever-steady decrease in wing beat frequency, a bit of buzzing on the floor and finally blissful silence... that does come close though. :D

I'll give the citronella lamps a shot, too.

Some of them have been bred with a tolerance for that stuff. Sometimes bloody violence is the only way to deal with them :D.

I like my little electrified tennis racquet :)

Takes a bit of hand eye coordination but once you get the hang of it popping flies in mid air becomes a great way to pass the day.

Also awesome for mozzies.

I managed to just build a bottle coke trap by cutting and inverting the top half of a 2l bottle and filling the bottom with half a cup of beer, they cant resist, fall in, fly around, get tired and drown. The trap averages 20-50 flies daily.Im wiping them out (live clsoe to horse stables :( )

Yip bought one on the weekend. What a joy.
Zap that fly in mid air, I didn't even find the remains?

Little tiny bits of exploded fly go everywhere, including into your lungs. ;)

One of the reasons I wouldn't have an electric zapper anywhere but outside.

The old school wire handle with leather flap type are still the best! Very reassuring "slap" when used correctly :p

Sorry for hijacking this thread.

I bought a Red Top Flycatcher (pic below) from Farm City (Farmers Corporation) in Pretoria yesterday but I am scared to attract all the flies of the whole neighbourhood to my home now.

Has anyone tried these before and can share their findings.

Thanks

Put it up but not to close to your house.

Back when I used them I put them up all around the property so that they made a barrier.

They work quite well but in my neighbourhood (plot) fill up quite quickly.

Heh. That's true, but they have a bit too much resistance for an effective mid-air stealth assault. They also get covered in fly-splotches which gets a bit yuck.

I find the air cushion ahead of the flap type can push the little buggers out of harms way :( hence my preference for the open mesh type saor's looking for.
