Thoughts on the Haval Jolion

Yeah, it’ll feel familiar with the same Blind Spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, surround-view cameras etc. Call me a sucker though but I don’t see those features as “toys”. BLIS and auto-emergency braking help avoid accidents. When even a Suzuki Baleno comes with surround-view cameras, I find it hard to accept when other manufacturers only offer rear PDC.

My wife switched just about all the 'safety' features off in her Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max, I haven't had much experience with all of them but can believe how annoying they can become, but both her and I are in our 40's and grew up driving Beetle's and CitiGolf's. I inadvertently switched lane assist on in her car on one trip and couldn't figure out how to switch the bloody thing off so had to keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times. BLIS is great though, as is the 360 Deg camera setup and adaptive cruise control, I haven't warmed up to the more intrusive features that auto steer or brake yet.

P.S. I drive a Touareg where lane change assist is simply pushing the car next to you out of their lane

If you’re an impatient driver, I think modern safety systems will be super-annoying … right up until you consider they’re trying to save your life and the lives of everyone else. Stay focused, stop drifting lanes, keep a better following distance, and all those annoying blinking lights and alarms will slow right down. I agree it’s a rocky road when you’re new to the systems and there’s no on-boarding, but it’s not that hard to figure out if you read the manual (at least on the first weekend you have your shiny new car). I choose life, so some proactive rather than just passive safety is deeply appreciated.

@FiestaST @epah After a LOT of research and kicking tyres, I’ve decided that a 2022 Haval Jolion 1.5T Super Luxury with 35 000km mileage is the best way I can spend R350 000. Do you agree?

I know the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro is the closest, but whenever I’ve read opinions they tend to favour the Jolion.

And just nothing else makes sense: not the Fronx GLX (four speed auto is a no-no), not the over-priced Seltos, and seeing as I’ve already had a Polo the T-Cross just feels like it will be a let-down.

Why the F are you asking this moron for car advice.
Listen only to @FiestaST

Personal opinion is stay away from Haval or any other Chinese made vehicle.

Is that opinion based on anything recent? I also hated the original Chery QQ, but the modern Chery and Haval SUVs are nothing at all like that. Toyota and Suzuki are pedalling Indian-made compromised SUVs made to a low budget, and neither they nor Kia and Hyundai can deliver the quality the Chinese are in the R250 000 to R450 000 price range.

The cheapest Jolion Hybrid Super Luxury I can find starts at R430 000 …. and R100 000 between that and the standard 1.5T I’ve found buys a lot of petrol.
They pretty much just launched.

If you wait until 2025 you’ll probably be able to pick them up for 350k or less.

I wouldn’t buy a non-HEV Haval.

Look for my thread on my 2022 H6 purchase in this very section, I had a Jolion for a few days and left some comments.

Or spend a bit more and just get the H6 HEV.

@Sinbad should be along any time now to tell you how slowly I drive and how I largely follow the letter of the traffic regulation...

Jokes aside, I can see the benefit in 'pro-active' safety systems. some of them anyway. I found them overly obtrusive in my wife's Chery but I am old enough that I learnt to drive in a manual with pretty much **** all automatic anything in it. So it is second nature for me to be as aware as humanly possible of everything around me and not rely on a 'system'. It has served me well thus far as I am still alive despite all the complete and utter ****ing morons on our roads but I do appreciate what new technology has to offer.

Also, who the **** RTFM's?

To everyone wondering how the Jolion hunt is going … it’s not. The one I wanted got sold … and then I felt meh about Jolions … and then I found a car with a trade-in assist deal I couldn’t refuse … and then I applied and have been approved and just waiting to sign the OTP.

I’m waiting for that dust to settle and I’ll reveal what I got (hint: not Chinese) and how (the how is gonna be controversial). Stay tuned…

I highly doubt it’s something like a Renault, Foxy is selling it like it is properly left-field.

We need a new thread about this development.

Come on.. I am in the same boat trying to find a car to buy.. tell us!!
I’m expecting to pick it up this afternoon rofl. Patience!

One thing I can tell you, visit www.cars.co.za and use the “Compare” tool from the menu. Very helpful to quickly identify differences between two cars you’re considering.

Ja it's not so much the features I've got an issue with, it's the settings and how intrusive they are.
The one time I drove a mate's car with these features, I mean in SA where you're dodging pot holes and passing those guys pulling recycling or cyclists cos we don't have proper cycle lanes, that thing was complaining the whole time. If I drove the way it wanted me to I'd have killed half a dozen people.

They'll get better over time I suppose.

Must say the only one I’ve considered turning off is the rear impact auto braking purely because I was coming out of my driveway one day and a car was passing (which I was fully aware of) and it just smashed on the brakes…and then my gate I’d already started closing would have hit the car if I didn’t operate it quickly enough.

But at the same time it has saved me more than once going grocery shopping and just not seeing people or cars because it’s so big.

If it just has some speed awareness it would be fine and then braking accordingly but it seems all these systems just know full slam on the ABS modes.
