honestly, they should just disband the police force and save the money. What is the use in having a police force if you are just going to let all their hard work go to waste anyway? Give the public a tax kickback so we can rather hire our own bodyguards, private investigators and hitmen and build re-inforced concrete security perimeters around our houses. Wild West here we come!

If you want to do something about prison overcrowding take a couple of kilometres of razor wire and build a camp in the Kalahari. Then let the families of the perps know where to send the food and water.

And you can make some space by bringing back the death penalty.

But I suppose if you only had a bail requirement of R1000 that the crime can't be that serious. Of course, this is the government we're talking about so it is more than likely that there are some serious criminals in that lot.

And for some reason it makes me think of explosive bracelets being an option to make sure the released don't just disappear.

in port elizabeth alone they are releasing 600 prisoners

Eastern Cape deputy director of public prosecutions Johan Bezuidenhout said yesterday that the public “must not ring alarm bells”, However, he admitted that suspects facing charges of murder, rape and armed robbery would be among those to be released.

that makes me feel a whole lot safer ....

So in other words the crime rate is gonna jump through the roof this christmas with 80% of the inmates being back in prison next year ....

You seem to be missing the point here. Election time is around the corner and the ruling party needs votes, especially in the E/Cape where COPE is making in roads.

Didn't something similar happen around election time not so long ago?

I dont really mind them releasing some of the petty criminals due to overcrowding - it cant be avoided until they build more prisons and we know stadiums and renaming everything is far more important than that  - but how the heck are rapists/murderers/armed robbery suspects getting sub-r1000 bail in the first place?

this is the new south africa and anc has changed the laws so much that criminals lead a luxury life in prison and get released for good behaviour before even starting their sentence.

in other words, anything is possible in this screwd up country....

the thing that will be quite funny is that when this blows up in their face's, they will somehow blame it on the white man.....

Wow, is this how they are going to fight crime? Very effective. I can see why criminals would vote for them.. Its all very encouraging to know you can get away with murder so easily.

Murderers, rapists and armed robbers. Sounds perfectly safe to let them all back into society as a christmas present. One question..
Why do the criminals get a xmas present, and the victims get a kick in the face?

Yes that is something I'd also like to know. I can maybe still understand a person robbing someone of a wallet containing R20, but murderers and rapists?

here is the best part :

“We approach the victim of the crime and family members, informing them about the decision. In that way, they become empowered and become our eyes and ears so that the inmate abides by the bail conditions,” said Bezuidenhout, adding that the project has had a 100% success rate in other areas.

Is that not tempting fate and placing victims of crime at jeopardy. And since when should victims be checking up on criminals bail conditions after they are released back into society? Was the victim's life not already adversely affected by the crime in the first place.

Surely this should be a voluntary situation where victims need to check up on criminals?

This country has a really skewed idea of crime and punishment.
