Speed cameras to watch out for in South Africa

There are three common types of speed traps in South Africa — fixed cameras, portable radar scanners, and average-speed-over-distance (ASOD) systems.

Speed traps deter motorists from exceeding legal speed limits and contribute greatly to the traffic fine revenue collected by provincial governments and local municipalities.

Just don't pay it R3 Billion Rand of unpaid fines is clearly and indication that it's not working!

Western Cape, had the right idea of impounding vehicles. You pay your fines + impound fee you get your vehicle back. Maybe you learn your lesson and start driving nicely.

If not after the third impound, they should just take away your licence, crush your vehicle and call it a day.

Seeing people slow down just before an ASOD camera is so funny!

It gets even funnier when you know its someone who drives through the ASOD zone every day on their way to work and home... drop anchors when they get to the camera, then fsck off like a stabbed rate afterwards.

Has anyone ever received one of these ASOD fines?
Which is what I would like to know also.
Up Sir Lowry's pass some cars fly past me, and I am on the limit. There is no turn off or point to stop except the lookout point, where few to none of them stop, till you hit the next camera.
Surely their average speed is above the limit and a fine is generated.

Me too. I often travel on the N1 between Cape Town and Beaufort West which is almost entirely covered by these ASOD cameras and the amount of people flying past me, usually in a luxury German vehicle, at 160km/h in a 120km/h zone is ridiculous. I often wonder if I'm the only person who actually understands how ASOD works. Either that or these people all have cloned numberplates.

Nah, durban has the best system. None of our cameras work for the last 5 years because they didnt pay the tenda. So there are no speed cameras (mobile or fixed) in durban and we haven't killed ourselves yet.

Speed cameras are just a money making revenue stream for the city, nothing more nothing less.

I don't promote what the Anti-ULEZ 'blade runners' are doing cutting down cameras.

FYI:
As an aside, these cameras have lots of copper and have good resale value on cash-converters and are not good targets for cable thieves.
Anti-ULEZ 'blade runners' are using a Reciprocating Saw
Currently on special at Takealot:

I'm not in any way suggesting using a Reciprocating Saw to take out these cameras.

EDIT: Don't use the Portable Lithium Electric Angle Grinder to take out these cameras.
Also on special at Takealot with 2 cutting disks https://www.takealot.com/portable-lithium-electric-angle-grinder/PLID93485661

My dad  The stretch after Sir Lowry's Pass heading towards Houw Hoek. When he opened the fine, he said "Where is that camera located?" My mom just rolled her eyes and said it's an ASOD section of the road, and been like that for years. Even funnier when you consider my dad usually drives 10 km/h below the speed limit.
