Hi Guys, pulling my hair here. For the last month, my wife cant send emails using Thunderbird. The emails start sending, then we get an error "Your SMTP server timed out.". I use Windows Live mail and the same SMTP server, but do not experience any issue at all. We have checked and double checked the settings with the ISP, all is correct.

Any suggestions?

Disclaimer. I no way to I condone the use of Thunderbird, but hey, it was her decision. Dont ask me why.

I'm probably not going to be of much help here but just to say that I had a similar issue with Thunderbird a couple years back.

As I recall I was running one of their Earlybird/beta versions of it though. As soon as I uninstalled and started using the "stable" version the problems disappeared.

Have you recently changed ISPs?

check with her email host for any potential blocks of her email address or the Public IP address she connects from.. What may have happened is, the email host may have blocked email address or IP address for authentication failures or possibly the account may have been compromised and was sending spam.. Note that this is only really applicable if the email host is not google, microsoft or yahoo..

I must add this happens 95% of the time, on some attempts, she can get the mails through. Surely you will get a notification from your ISP for the above?

this is going to vary greatly depending on isp.. the fact that emails go through and then doesnt, does lead me to believe that this may be a block of IP address or email account.. contact the host, explain to them what is happening and make it very clear that you want to know whether or not the IP address or the email account it self is being blocked and why.. provide them with your public IP address.. the server admins should be able to check the logs and give an answer in a few minutes.. of there is no blocking happening, it may be another server related issue.. i dont think it is thunderbird, simply because emails are able to be sent.. if it were thunderbird, emails would not send at all.. it may be that thunderbird is causing the blocking though.. some email clients can create a lot of connections to the mail server and some server admins set low connection limits, and if reached will drop the connections..

I use Seamonkey, had to update to latest version. All my mail fail before the update, send and receiving. It's not the same problem but update Thunderbird maybe it helps. Big maybe.

could the problem be elsewhere on her computer? e.g. dns settings?
you could try to also sniff the communication with wireshark/tcpdump on her machine or your router/etc. and thus find out what Thunderbird is actually doing (or not doing)
