Hi Guys,

I have this noise on my cars head, its like a ticking noise that is coming from the top, more towards the back of the head.

It sounds like a bad lifter sound and gets louder with acceleration.

I have did a complete head overhaul
-changed valves
-lifters
-seals
-guides
- also did oil pressure test and everything seems fine.

but he noise is still there, any advice?

Tune your mind to ignore the sound otherwise it will drive you crazy.

The Jetta I had did it from day one until I sold it at 578 000 km, with one wife and 2 daughters trying their best to kill it off.

This is the experience I had. VW, while mine was under warranty claim, (I of course can never prove that they actually did anything) they removed the head and did all the normal things 5 times. Once out of warranty, I got a private mechanic to have a look and he could never find what the H causes the noise. It would go away for thousands of km, and the inexplicably come back and sometimes it sounded worse than a jack hammer. But go away permanently? Never.

Hi Skeptic,

I put in new lifter and the noise is still there

was the cam lobes checked for excessive wear..? while you replaced the lifters, if the cam lobes are worn excessively, it has the same effect as worn lifters and you can still get that ticking noise.. i stand very much corrected on this next point since my memory does not serve me very well.. if you have the carb engine, and if the petrol pump sits mounted on the head driven by the cam, that could also cause the ticking.. like i said, i stand corrected on this though..

Injectors definitely sound like lifters. very rattly.

should i change complete intake or just injectors?

how can i test if it is really the in injectors?

i have 2 friends with the same exact noise , 1 has a velo 1.4i and the other has a polo year 2000 1.6i.

they both replaced lifters cam and the polos engine was rebuilt but noise is still there.

Hi Drifter,

Would the injectors sound like a lifter tick?

cause it sound like its hear there

Yes, they get very noisy with high mileage. Direct injection sound like that off the show room floor.
