Sounds like bent valves to me,
Did you fit the lifters? If so did you compress them and prime them first

HIGHLY unlikely - bent valves will not seat properly resulting in loads of misfires.

For what it's worth years back I owned a 1900 kombi, lifters gave me endless problems clacking away for days on end until a mate of mine (who owned a 1.8 jetta) told me to try Shell helix. It worked like a charm, noise disappeared completely. I also remember having to prime the lifters by soaking in oil prior to installation.

Is the lifters from the agents?

20xe opel motors have the same problem if the car is fitted with generic lifters but sometimes you get lucky.
