Times Media and Vidi giving away Ferrari 458 Spider

R1.50 per entry + 20c per 20 seconds?

Something tells me that if they get enough people entering, they'll more than break even on this little competition.

Oh no doubt, they wouldn't run it if they don't at least break even. Forgetting the USSD code cost for a minute:

R5,000,000 / R1.50 per entry means they'll need 3,333,334 to break even, that's less than 186,000 entries per week I don't know what the distribution numbers of all those titles are, but that seems doable to me. But this isn't where the bulk of the money is coming from, the increase in sales is. Because people like me, who don't buy any of the publications, will start just to get an entry or two. And if I figure buying the publication is worth it, they've scored another customer.

Plus I doubt they'll need too much marketing spend on this, winning a R5 million Ferrari is sure to generate massive hype that spreads via unpaid channels (word of mouth) - my entire office is talking about this. Oh, and the "free" advertising they get from news sites (like MyBB) picking up and running with the story is also something to consider.

It's a ballsy move, but one that I'm sure will pay big time.

I was jsut trying to do the math here.

each paper has a USSD code right?
so in theory to maximize your chances, you want to buy a copy of each paper a day. so that is about R50? no idea how ,uch the papers cost.

plus each paper you enter with will cost you 7*18*1.5 in entry costs. plus the 20c per 20 seconds. so that comes to about R200 for the entire period.

so 2 papers dayly costs, *7*18 plus r200
you could end up paying about R1460 over the course of 18 weeks if a paper is R10 each. I dont know what they cost and I am lazy.

am I correct with the math here?

Well I'm going to enter with a single entry. One irritating thing I found is it sends you an SMS confirmation which you then have to exit the USSD screen to read/c&p. I hope this doesn't entitle me to VAS butthurt.

This reminds me of the Vodacom BMW giveaway. Would be nice seeing an actual dealership stamp shown how much they actually paid for the car. Doubt they actually paid retail pricing due to too much exposure for ferrari.

Exposure for ferrari? Ferrari couldn't give a toss about advertising from vidi...

I wonder what the gaming commission will be saying about this one. A lot of 'competitions' are just gambling or raffle s with a better PR campaign. Guess we will see soon.. If they expecting a lot of the % funding to come from entries or profit then I'm sure the gaming commission will be on their behind for a %

I wonder if the vehicle is plastered with vidi branding for that year?
