[TIP] TV HDR uses 50% more power.

Just FYI, noticed my backup unit complaining when I had the Xbox Series X and my TV HDR on, if you turn off HDR it seems to consume a lot less power.

"watching a film in HDR eats up nearly 50 percent more power"

Would make sense, as HDR bumps up the brightness. The series X itself can also use 200w by itself, normally what I would do is set my local dimming to Eco mode and that drops my consumption by 50%.

I'm impressed with the console but it does use a ton more power than the Series S I used to own.

Never thought I'd be this conscious about monitor/TV eco modes and power consumption, but here we are!

Trust me, what your TV is using is far better then even a few years ago, the fact that for example my 65" with a soundbar, Xbox Series X and all the miscellanous peaks at 400w.
The Series X is almost 3 times more powerful then the Series S so that is understandable.

I tweeted at the Xbox engineers that I wish the Series X would have a optional "step down" mode where it would essentially output like a Series S, that would be cool, especially during times when you run off battery. Kind of like a PC power plan change.

Sadly that wouldn't work, as it would need to drop resolutions or framerates or something. When running on batteries I just lower the things I can, brightness, backlight and such, it helps a ton.

For comparison the Series S also use less than My old PS3.

But yeah dimming helps. My 58" usermode was set to 40% brightness for load shedding. Not that the Mrs ever used it, now that I gone LiFePO4 neither do I, even on PS5/Series X in my house is business as usual.

I always keep mine at 40% sometimes I lower it to 30 or 20, cause anything higher just seems to overwash things. I've never had a TV at 100% for a long time. NVM you said brightness :) I was thinking backlight

Depends on room lighting. We normally on (Automatic) Dynamic? more or less 65% brightness.

Same with old TV's.

I end up lowering TV brightness all the way when the power goes out.
It sucks, but it's 70Watt versus 145Watts so double the time I can watch if Esbomb craps itself and doesn't stick to the loadshedding schedule.

100+ watts is a crapton of light from LED's if you think about it... so these fancy HDR 1000+ Nits TV's must be pulling a crapton.

Also insane how much my mindset has changed in the past few years. No more overpowered gaming PC's etc. for me. I stick to small power-efficient devices and any plans to upgrade usually revolves around caring more about TDP values and stuff like solid state drives etc.

I'd lie if I said it wasn't enjoyable to some extent, seeing how far you can go with less energy.
The gamification of our f**dness.

I think I remember reading that OLED TVs are more power efficient... not so efficient on the wallet, though!

The rumors of burn-in has permanently scarred my mind anyway, I'd be too paranoid to use it!

Correct.
I've given up on the idea of buying one to be honest, once you want 65" and up OLED is mofo expensive.

I'd be better off spending that money on additional battery redundancy anyway. Currently looking at some additional power backup solutions since my 100Ah LifePo4 system doesn't cut it when we have a 34 Hour power outage like we did this past weekend (yes, that one hurt)

I specced it for 8 hours and we've have quite a few 12+ hour outages so far this year. It's a tough spend though, blowing all that money for something you don't really need, but when you do you kinda sit there in the dark thinking "this time I'm doing it".

Seems there's tech. on the way now that matches it or comes close to OLED anyway, plus, I run a TV into the ground so the OCD that comes with OLED burn-in would not work for me.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Shows what assumption gets you.

You'd think it would be much less than LED because the parts that don't light up don't light up at all instead of a backlight, interesting. But ja, same, even the thought of burn-in sends me running to the hills, too much OCD too.

Would poef myself if I spent R30k on a TV only to have the Call of Duty HUD burnt into the frame after three years LOL

If you already have LiFePO4 then get 2 x

P.S. Does anyone know if these Mecer inverter battery kits have the ability to use a lithium battery if wanted to get rid of the deep cycle one?

I'm assuming you'd need an inverter where you can select the chemistry so it can adjust the voltages and or depth of discharge? I didn't want to start a whole thread just for this question.

Google Hubble S series ;)\

I just dropped a Sako 24V100AH on my Mecer 2400va and this last weekend was great as I did not need to watch my consumption like I use to on LA's

Would love to do that but my issue now is space.
Built a custom enclosure for my system but now I'm out of space in my flat.
Plus if I ever move I'd at least to take something more portable with me instead if spending all that cash on an ROI I'll probably never make back.
