If you look around, most books/mags will give you a "hospital" list. Otherwise a short and easier route is to purchase a pre-done hospital bag. Saves you the bother of finding the correct items and packing them. We used a bag from a website: www.beingmom.co.za I think ot was.

Just make sure you have stuff packed before hand, depending on the child, it could be early or a surprise or anything. Babies do not care about schedules.

We received a bag with everything we would need from the hospital when my ex went for her last checkup before the birth.

+1

Most of the lists were pretty spot on. I did notice that lists that came from Baby City and Toys are Us do list way more things than the lists we found in the pregnancy mags and the one from our hospital. I think the shops list more because they want you to buy more.

Both our insurance and hospital gave us bags but it was only stocked with a few items so don't count on that getting everything you need.

One thing that has really saved us was our bottle warmer to put a boiled bottle in filled with boiled water so all you have to do is just add the formula when baby is ready to feed. (unless your wife is going to breast feed.).

Also, if your baby is colic, like ours was, don't hesitate to go to a sleep trainer. I was very hesitant and thought it would be a waste of money but she was amazing in helping us deal with the colic and in finally getting our son to sleep decently.

That is true but like I said, the saving is not worth the pain.

My son used Cuddlers so he was a bit cheaper than the northern suburb kids who only used Huggies.

Dischem released their own brand, comes in at R89 a bag, muuuuch cheaper then other brands and it works perfectly :)

Diapers must be the most expensive regular item on the baby shopping list. I bought Pampers today - R164 for 74.

Look after your relationship.

You are going to get tired, crabby, broke... Scared. Remember that you and your partner are going to have to watch the hell out for one another. Be on the same team, support each other in everything. The next few years may see the first time that you'll have to consciously take care of one another and that can be a rude awakening.

Babies can be demanding at times and you'll soon learn how much luxury you have enjoyed in terms of time and responsibility. Remember to keep things solid between the two of you.

Some excellent advice in this thread that will help a lot, but the fact of the matter is, that you cannot prepare for the change that's about to happen in your life. It is however a great change in your life :D

Some advice from my side:

Don't stress or panic; if you have friends that already have children, ask them for advice first.

Also, enjoy the baby years; you will miss them!

100 diapers from dischem for 158, why pay so much for something that's going to end up full of crap and in the bin: -). The diapers are just as good, after having tried different ones.

Just out of interest, how many nappies does the typical baby go through?

I mean what would be the TOTAL cost for nappies over the entire period the baby needs them?

1. Insist that "breast is best" - so you don't have to go warming bottles in the middle of the night.
2. Put a bed and cot in the spare room - then complain about being disturbed in the night so missus goes off to spare room.
3. First time she asks you to bath baby drop baby in water ( gently but not too gently ) so baby screams blue murder - missus will scream too, at you "WHAT YOU DOING WITH MY BABY!!! HERE GIVE HIM TO ME I'LL DO IT." No more baff time for you.
4. First time she asks you to change nappy because she is tired after hard day ( not that you aren't tired, mind ) open old nappy and hurl all over baby. Missus will scream "WHAT YOU DOING WITH MY BABY!!! HERE GIVE HIM TO ME I'LL DO IT." No more nappy time for you.

Also, disposable nappies. Seriously, **** towel nappies. They save money but do you really want to wash **** nappies?

Well lets say you need to use what 2 nappies a day. blu said she just paid R163 for 74. So lets call it R2,50 each x 2 is R5,00 per day. So for the year R5 x 365 = R1,825 per year. Not THAT bad if my calculations above are correct, which they might be way off haha.

So say your baby needs nappies until the age of 3. That would be 3 x R1,825 so R5,475! I'd do that as a once off purchase (put it on your credit card if you can't spare the whole amount.)

There we go nappy crisis solved. :)

I think it's more like 5-6 per day...
