Well lets say you need to use what 2 nappies a day. blu said she just paid R163 for 74. So lets call it R2,50 each x 2 is R5,00 per day. So for the year R5 x 365 = R1,825 per year. Not THAT bad if my calculations above are correct, which they might be way off haha.

So say your baby needs nappies until the age of 3. That would be 3 x R1,825 so R5,475! I'd do that as a once off purchase (put it on your credit card if you can't spare the whole amount.)

There we go nappy crisis solved. :)

I think it's more like 5-6 per day...

Yeah that's for an older baby, up to 6 months old it can be 8 to 10, also if they have an upset tummy then it can be more.

That was a pure guess, I actually had no clue! 8-10 for the first 6 months! That'll increase the figure by quite a bit.

OP, best advice? Cheerish every freaking moment. good and bad. enjoy changing nappies, enjoy hearing your baby cry....especially enjoy holding your baby. when you get frustrated.....realize that you are taking it for granted and just smile and enjoy the moments that you have.

my son was born 3.5 weeks ago and has been in NICU from the second he was born. we haven't been able to hold him once. for the first 2.5 weeks he was on a respirator and we didn't get to hear him cry (due to the tube down his nose). we only saw his nose for the first time last week.

so i really mean it...enjoy every moment!

don't know yet. there's a couple of ideas but waiting on the genetic tests to come back. they believe distal arthrogryposis type 1.

with him being preemie, he has under developed lungs and kidneys. one thing though he didn't get jaundice. :) currently fighting a Staph infection and just got over some rare pneumonia bacterial last week.

OP - Sorry for hijacking your thread!!!!

distal arthrogryposis type 1.

never heard of this lol. Just did a quick search on what it is, does he have clubfoot ? I dont know if this will be a viable option but there was a brittish orthopedic surgeon that developed a technique for treating clubfoot using a cast. He invented the technique by helping poor african countries in the doctors without borders thing (i think i read about it over 4 years ago so its hazy). You could run this idea past the specialist next time you meet him. I will see if I can get you a citation to present to the doctor if he doesnt know about it.

Thats good, that PUVA chamber is torture for the little ones.

Cracker, just to say stay in there. We were in that place last year ( 85 days in the NICU ), its a long a rough road but it does end. Not sure if it would help but if you want to ask anything, feel free to pop a pm.

it's part of a larger group of Arthrogrypsis Multiplex Congentia which is a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by multiple joint contractures and can include muscle weakness and fibrosis. It is a non-progressive disease. The disease derives its name from Greek, literally meaning 'curved or hooked joints

my son has one of the rare ones where it affects all x4 limbs. but the's already got splints for his arms and hands to straighten them out. They can't do the full tests yet (muscle mass and such) as he still to small (2kg at 38.5 weeks gestation / 3.5 weeks since birth).

i'm also lucky cause i'm a yank (and the better half is south african) so we are discussing going to states if the treatment isnt good down here. i really hope that we don't have to leave as i have a great job and this country is awesome, especially compared to some of the holes that i have been too.

but the good thing is that he has a very good chance to lead a healthy active life.

thanks Kosmik! the hardest thing for me? everyone is asking how baby is doing or my girlfriend coping...never anyone asks how i am doing. i don't know if i come off as an uncaring ass sometimes but it just sucks cause i haven't had a chance to vent / breakdown.

Sadly you don't get a chance often and depending on your partner, you don't want to show it. It's not uncaring, you would have expreienced quite a shock/trauma. Folks should understand and those who don't, should be looked at with a critical eye.

Just out of interest, how many nappies does the typical baby go through?

I mean what would be the TOTAL cost for nappies over the entire period the baby needs them?

Well lets say you need to use what 2 nappies a day.

2 nappies a day?? No sir!! Remember if you do not change the nappies often enough after they have made a "no. 1" or a "no. 2" , the baby is at risk of getting nappy rash.

My baby is 21 months and on average she goes through about 6 nappies a day.

There goes your calculations :D

I'm sorry to hear that bud. Keep the chin up.

Haha, i had a feeling I could be WAAY off. Anyway, will find out soon enough I guess. My SO would like to have a baby before she's thirty. That gives me 2 years.

I heard costs abt 15k over the 3 years...

So still not ridiculous as some people make it out to be. They way some people reckon you need to take out a second mortgage to pay for nappies! :D

I kind of think the whole prevents colic thing isn't much more than marketing. Colic is incredibly difficult to prevent.

On which kind is good it's preference. Nuk and Avent are 2 that we had good experiences with.

Just try prevent your baby sucking air, angle the bottle and your baby correctly and burp him properly and you should be ok... burping is an art form.

Learn to burp a baby properly is the best advice I can give after 3 kids. You don't burp them by patting their back, it just irritates them, you need to "squeeze" it out. Also patting a baby too hard can actually hurt them and sometimes this can be serious.

* Rest the baby against your chest with head above your shoulder, important to keep your baby upright.
* Place your open hand against their lower back just above the bum.
* Press firmly against the back and then gently move the hand up towards the upper back - same to rubbing their back but just firmly.
* Repeat until you get a mother of a burp!

At first one is too scared to do this as they feel so fragile but after a few attempts you will get it right become a burp master. My sister in law taught me this technique.

Also do not be afraid to take advice from big mammas, don't dismiss 10'000 years of rural experience because we live in a modern age.
