My wife does that. We don't change the nappy too often. But when she changes the nappy she hides his whole bum and goods under a layer of bum cream. He hasn't had any nappy rash yet, nearly 4 months. So maybe there is something behind this cake icing method.

congrats on the little one :D

Our angel is almost a year now and wow what an experience it has been! loving it.

The sleepless nights will get better ( it will trust me :) ) we've been very lucky with our little one, she sleeps through the night and only wakes up for a feed at around 5am and then straight back to sleep.

we also did the 3 hour feed thing but only because she was so little and a little bit under weight at birth.
after the first month though she got into a routine and started to sleep right through the night.

i remember thinking i'm in way over my head the first month :) lol but man now i cant imagine my life without her.
i hate leaving her in the mornings and the first month of creche i could hardly get through a full days work without leaving early because i was so worried about her. things get easier and instict def kicks in (even in dads :D )

all the best

Our little girl is 6 days old today. She came early by about 9 days.
So far everything is fine.

One q i have is on sleeping at night. Till now she sleeps from around 10 pm till around 4:30am. During the day she is awake for feeding every 3 to 4 hours.

Some say this is fine, others say wake her up at night?

I think if she sleeps let her he, she will wake when she is hungry. .?

Congrats to you! Now the fun times begin :)

I wouldn't bother waking her up either, you've got it good! I know the nurse and paed advises you to wake the baby up, and that's what I did at the beginning, but I don't think you should. As long as she is gaining a healthy weight, you should enjoy your sleep while you can.

The problem with Nurses and Paeds is that they follow the textbook guidelines. The textbook says that a baby should eat once every 2-3 hours.
The reality is that every baby is very different. Honestly, the nurses and Paeds that suggest those things are not worth their weight in play dough. They should be smart enough to realise that it is a guideline and extrapolate their advice from there.

With the first child, everyone (and ourselves with ours) wants to do it by the book. But what we realised as we went through the months with our daughter is that as long as she is putting on weight (weekly clinic weigh ins confirmed) then let her sleep. I wish we had let ours sleep until hungry!

so after looking @ most travel systems we ended up taking the Peg Perego Switch travel system + isofix base.

I called all the places that stock Peg Perego and finally a shop in the Oriental Plaza was the cheapest.
They sell different makes not only Peg Perego.
its a Authorized Peg Perego company.
They around R1200 / R1500 cheaper than any other place.
All products comes with warranty. the owner knows the products well and gives discount as well.

Shop is called Cassims Baby Shop - Upper Level @ the Grand Bizarre area.
I would highly recommend them.

Great thread to read

Our little one will be 3 weeks old tm. Crazy how quick these 3 weeks have gone. The lack of sleep is already affecting me at work. I turn up looking like a hobo :p
I took a weeks leave when she was born and that helped my wife a lot. Delivering a child is no mean feat. I am now considering taking more leave just to help out.

Seeing that little face staring at you is the most powerful thing I have ever experienced. No one can explain it until you he/she opens their eyes and looks at you for the first time.

Those fancy nappy bins that lock out smells is a MUST! We had to feed her formula for the first few days until my wifes milk came in, and now its a lot easier to feed her in the early hours of the morning. (Breast is best, but that go's without saying)

So far we have had her in the bed with us (Do not worry, she is very safely protected from us) , and that has worked well, but we will start to leave her in the cot longer and longer as she gets a bit older.

My wife and I are just starting out as are many of you, and it is a fantastic/terrifying experience, but so worth it!

If you think it is worth it now, just wait until they actually start smiling. You will know the difference between a wind grimace and a smile when the smile happens. And then when they start to giggle, and you can actually purposely pull a smile or giggle from them. That is when it really starts to feel like they are showing you how much they appreciate you.
Until then, all the appreciation cannot be expressed openly by your little one.

Congrats though. It is truly the most terrifying and fantastic experience, that is for sure. I hope you are getting some sleep, and that your boss at work is not a dick if you are not.

Not in your area so can't help with your first question.

My mom gave us 2 Yoomi bottles - we never used them because they had to be boiled for a long time in order to "charge up" and store the heat - they are still in the cupboard...

We would just ask a restaurant for boiling water whenever we were out and needed to make up a bottle. When the hot water arrived, we would add some to a pre-determined amount of cold water in the bottle and then add the formula powder...

Have fun with the washing of bottles - happiest day of my life when my daughter kicked her formula needs...

I wonder if the "new" ones that you can microwave for 2 minutes to charge up would solve this problem...?

Exactly, just shoot from the hip and you'll be fine.
That and that are both terrible advice. You need preparation, and lots of it. Perhaps 100+ years ago everyone had solid family units where the mothers/grandmothers could provide one another with advice and hands-on help but that doesn't exist for everyone anymore. Now if a mother is stuck at home and panicking she might only have the internet, or maybe some outdated and unhelpful family opinions masquerading as advice. That can save parents from depression and prevent health issues with children.
