Even reading carefully doesn't always help. Colesberg 1 stop Wimpy is listed as a participating store, but they would only give a 50 % discount to my friend with a voucher yesterday. When he pointed out that it said complimentary free burger, the lady at Wimpy replied that she knows that, but that they only give 50 per cent.
I got so annoyed at Engen the other day, at Wimpy... Got this free burger and the typical waiter asked afterward, "Gaan jy nie tip nie?"
I don't have a problem with tipping but at that moment in time, my mind was elsewhere.

I also went to one recently and then the system was offline apparently.

I went to winelands one stop and the system was offline, they made me write the WiCodes on the back of the slip and still gave the discount luckily. But probably best to make sure the system is working, or they can help you with the voucher before you eat.

I wish I could reinvent a world where restaurants paid their staff and didn't expect the customers to do so on their behalf

Regarding these issues Iv had a seamless experience with all my codes besides one last month.

Redeemed the code an hour before claiming it at the Wimpy but continuously failed when trying to scan the code into the system. Called eBucks on the spot and all they required was the Wimpy till slip and the WiCode. Cash for the burger meal was refunded to my card in 4 days.

Not saying it’s acceptable but happy with the minimal effort to fix the problem and just throwing it out there if others struggle too.

That would be the current world.

Restaurants underpay and expect tips to cover the minimum salary requirement set by the law. If tips don't then the restaurant has to cover the minimum pay.

So not tipping does not mean the waiter gets nothing. Just the owner actually abides by the law.

But why should customers pay them anything? Surely the restaurant should fit the full bill for their employment?

The discounted vouchers seems to have gone/shrunk. Only discount on NuMetro now. Used to be 4 or 5 Stores offering discount on vouchers.

If they paid minimum no one would do it. So the allure is that with tips the waiter gets way more than minimum and the restaurant makes more money. Everyone wins except the customer.

Luckily here in Asia tips are frowned upon, and in Japan could be considered an insult.

So don't pay them a minimum, pay them a fair wage

The same can be asked when filling up petrol. We pay the guys salaries who is doing the work
But do you tip the cashier at the little shop by the filling station? Why should the guy working outside get a tip, but not the guy inside?

Also, do you tip the salesman at the car dealership? Or the person at the Vodacom store you got the cellphone contract from? Or, since this is an eBucks thread, how about the teller who helped you in the FNB branch?

We have it lucky compared to the US. 20% is expected on any value meal. Less is considered a complaint of service. People frequently give more. Their minimum wage requirements are even less strict. But the bias toward tipping does disadvantage back-of-house staff such as cooks.

I quite like giving a larger tip here when I've had a voucher or free meal. I don't have to endure what those service workers do and its an acknowledgement of that. Anecdotally, in South Africa I have certainly seen an outsize amount of abuse hurled at people in these settings. It's quite sad when customers show that level of entitlement.

Couldnt agree more, I was a waiter many years ago and know how crap it can be at times. No salary just tips.

You have a voucher for free food, because you have a bank account that may cost more a month than that person makes a day, least you can do is pop a little bit more than usual or at least something at all. Pay it forward help your fellow man/woman just a little. Wont make a difference to you but will to them!... [OUT]
