To GW or not to GW...

Ok...I am a regular console gamer and have been looking at GW for a long time now. I like the style of GW more over WOW and not in the mood for the idiots that seems to plague WOW.

I have never played MMORPG and a bit wary of the cost implications - internet and running costs.
What is the bandwidth usage like and should I even bother with a HSDPA USB modem? (I'm waiting for Neotel...)

What are the required and recommended specs to play GW and more importantly should I get GW now or should I wait for GW2?

Help and advice is appreciated.

As long as your getting good pings (<500ms), which is unlikely all the time on HSDPA/3G, you'll be fine on MMO/MMORPGs.

another question guys...which one do i buy...i see there are about 3 campaigns...

3 Chapters and an expansion. Each of the chapters you can play separately, or combine them into 1 account so your characters can go everywhere

Prophecies gives you access to i'd say the orginal story line

Factions gives you access to the Ritualist and Assassin

Nightfall gives you access to the Paragon and Dervish

and the expansion GW:EN gives you access to more equipment, quests, zones, monsters.

I would *seriously* suggest making sure you have all 3 chapters in the same account.

I recently bought the full package - All 4 chapters in one pack. Works out cheaper than starting off with one and buying them as you go. Love the game, really awesome. Bandwidth is really very minimal. I use more bandwidth browsing basic stuff in an hour than I do in GW.

I would also advise getting the "battlechest", but if you really have to pick one, go for Nightfall imo, it has heroes(sidekicks) :D

Also Eye of the North can't be played by itself, its a ad on.

It actually makes zero sense buying each one on its own- Buying the complete collection works out a lot cheaper than getting them separately. I got mine for R399.

The only reason not to buy the Complete Collection is if you want the Collector's Editions.

ok...been able to get a copy of the game from a friend of mine and he has all 3 campaigns and the Eye of the North expansion.
I want to see if this is for me...before I buy the set for myself.

He says i can create char or two on his account and see if i like the game.

Where do the guys play - US or EU...I am completely n00b when it comes to MMORPG's and online play...I understand that the first 7 levels are basically solo play...ummm...I am looking at Asassin/Mesmer for the char...sounds like an interesting build with stealth and illusions, jsut have to decide whether to use the mesmer as primary or the asassin...but I might want to start with warrior/elementalist build to start the game with to find my feet.
Any tips?

You can hop across areas, think its 5 'area' changes per account. You can solo all the way up to 20 if you really want. Your primary profession (or class) decides quite a bit, visually, equipment and more importantly, your primary profession attribute

You can change EU to US to intern anytime you want.

Pm me when you have made a char, and ill invite you to a guild. The other members will help you find your feet.

Ps maybe start with a warrior, they are nice and easy in my opinion. Also your secondary you can change as many times as you like ;)

Well i had a look and read through the manual extensively and i like the idea of asassin/mesmer...asassin will be the primary and mesmer the secondary.

I am surprised to see that the combo is not done.
Has anyone had any success with this build?

I do have a assassin but I use either dervish or elementalist as secondary....

And there are assassin/mesmers out there just not very many.

Bandwidth usage is very low. I used my 3G/HSDPA USB connection during December / Jan and I averaged between 6-7MB of data / hour. During n 15-hour stint I did about 100MB of data. This was playing the game, doing quests, missions, zoning, etc. I even did some PvP during this time.

The PC specs are low too. It can play on a really old sysyem, with 1GHz CPU, 500MB-1GB RAM and a 64MB onboard gfx card.
Of course, these specs are very low and the entry-level PC's being sold these days are way better than this, especially on CPU, GFX and RAM level.
The better your GFX card is, the more of the detail you can enable to view GW in all its splendour. :)
If you have all campaigns, you will need about 4GB of disk space to do a full download of all content via the -image command. Otherwise, a single campaign will consume anything from 700MB-1.5GB.

YES, it is worthwhile to get GW1. ;) The release date for GW2 is still being kept secret and we are basically hoping for a public beta in 2009 somewhere (probably Q3-4) with a slight possibility of GW2 launching in 2009 still, but in all likelihood perhaps 2010 is a more realistic release date for GW2.

PS> Game travel is open to all chars on one account, if you have all campaigns and expansion linked. You can also travel between different regions - America, Europe, Japan, Korea, China and International for an unlimited amount of times. People that say you can only change regions 5 times, are still not aware this was changed quite a while ago and are spreading lies.

Much appreciated...that is very low bandwidth usage actually...
Should I just start with prophecies and work my way up to eye of the north?

Lol, get nightfall frst, there you get heroes which makes every other campaign a lot easier.

Heroes are much better than henchies :D

I got Nightfall, and then factions then proph and at the end EotN :)
