To VDSL or not to VDSL...

If anyone can give some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently on 10MB/s business account (AH uncapped), meaning unthrottled & unshaped.

My exchange is being commissioned the 25th Nov. If I move to a 20 or 40 MB/s uncapped account, would the throughput be better at all times or not, seeing that congestion will be a thing of the past, or will the contention ratios become as bad as before?

Internet is mostly used for Netflix.

Thanks!

Guess it varies from area to area. Here where I am I can get full 20Mbit speeds any time of the day, providing I'm using an unshaped account.

If you have the money I would highly recommend moving to 20Mbit, it is great for Netflix. Here is a graph of bandwidth usage on Netflix I did a little while ago, it definitely helps having more bandwidth:

Contention ratios will always be there. Telkom has upgrade their uplinks from multiple 2megs to 1gig fibre. Congestion shouldn't be a problem anymore. Hopefully your exchange has been upgraded as well. I say go for it.

I would also just like to add that I wouldn't bother with the 40Mbit unless you are either using mostly local services or have multiple people using the line at once. Also 40Mbit uncapped is ridiculously expensive.

Hi There,
Higher throughput would improve the performance of services like netflix. Remember though that ADSL is offered as a best share service and the more people on it then the more you have to share. The increase in the capacity means that there is greater room to add more people (or the other way to look at it is provide a better service to the current subscribers). So you should see an improved service on the current line offering initially and I would (given my Scottish background) try that out first before taking more money out of the wallet.

Regards

Tim
